Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Palmary OCD-3225CAM that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Palmary OCD-3225CAM is a CNC cam grinder: a cylindrical grinder whose work spindle is a controlled C axis, so the wheel can follow a non-round shape as the part turns. It is the shortest of the CAM models, with 250 mm (9.8 in) between centers, Ø320 mm (12.6 in) of swing and Ø300 mm (11.8 in) of grinding diameter.
The hardware is unlike the ordinary OCD machines. Palmary says the infeed axis is driven by a linear motor on a linear guideway with a closed loop linear scale, to avoid backlash, and that the work spindle has a built-in motor and a precise angle encoder. The table backs that up: the workhead is rated 5.2 kW (7.0 hp), many times the motor of a plain cylindrical grinder of this size, and the feed axes 3.6 kW (4.8 hp) each. The control is by NUM.
Following a cam profile takes acceleration rather than speed. Rapid advance is only 4 m/min (157 ipm), and the work spindle runs from 10 to 500 rpm. The wheel is small and light, Ø355 mm by 50 mm on a 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) motor, and a CBN wheel is offered as an option.
Table stroke is 586 mm (23.1 in), the same as on the OCD-3240CAM. The machine keeps the swivelling workhead and 0° to 12° table swivel of a universal grinder, so round work can be done too. Weight is 3,400 kg (7,496 lb).

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Eccentric circles and non-round shapes, as well as ordinary cylindrical work. Palmary says it developed the cam type for moving easily from the workpiece drawing to the grinding program, with precise angle control from a C axis that has an accurate encoder.
02
A NUM controller is listed in the standard accessories, along with linear scales for the X and C axes. CAD/CAM software appears in the optional accessories. Minimum setting unit on the wheelhead is 0.001 mm.
03
250 mm (9.8 in) between centers, Ø300 mm (11.8 in) maximum external grinding diameter and 150 kg (331 lb) between centers. The wheelhead strokes 257 mm (10.1 in) and the table 586 mm (23.1 in).
04
The standard wheel is Ø355 mm by 50 mm wide on a 127 mm bore, at 33 m/s (6,496 ft/min), with a grinding wheel inverter. Palmary lists a CBN wheel of Ø400 x 16 x 152.4 mm and an electroplated diamond roller dressing device as options.
