Overview

The Supertec PL-2550CNC is a saddle-type CNC surface grinder with a 250 × 500 mm (9.8 × 19.7 in) table, the smaller of two models in the maker's high-precision saddle range. Vertical and cross axes run on linear guide ways with ball screws, each driven by an 800W AC servo motor, and the control is a SIEMENS 828D or FANUC Series 0i-MF.

Supertec offers the longitudinal axis in two builds, which the table marks H and B. H is the traditional arrangement, a box way table moved by a hydraulic cylinder, with table speed of 3~25 m/min. B replaces the hydraulics with a linear guide way, ball screw and 1KW AC servo motor, for 1~15 m/min. The B build gives the control a positioned X axis; the H build gives the faster reciprocation that plain surface grinding likes.

This is a small-wheel machine. The wheel measures 180 × 13 × 31.75 mm and turns at 3,500 rpm on 60 Hz supply, with a 3 HP (2.2 kW) spindle motor. That suits toolroom work, punches, inserts and small die components, and it rules out heavy stock removal across the full table.

Four grinding modes are programmed: surface, criss-cross, plunge and pitch, the last for slots at different pitch and the same depth. The minimum feed setting is 0.001 mm. The machine occupies 2,800 × 2,500 × 2,300 mm (110.2 × 98.4 × 90.6 in) and weighs 2,500 kg (5,511 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Full CNC from SIEMENS 828D or FANUC Series 0i-MF on a compact 250 × 500 mm table
  • Vertical and cross axes on linear guide ways with ball screws and 800W AC servo motors
  • Longitudinal axis available as hydraulic (H) or ball screw with servo (B)
  • Programmed surface, criss-cross, plunge and pitch grinding modes
  • Minimum feed setting of 0.001 mm

Limitations

  • Spindle motor is 3 HP (2.2 kW), well below the 7.5 HP (5.6 kW) of the PL-3060CNC
  • The 13 mm wide wheel covers little width per pass
  • The B build limits table speed to 1~15 m/min
  • Supertec's table states no maximum table load for this model

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What control does the Supertec PL-2550CNC use?

The table lists SIEMENS 828D or FANUC Series 0i-MF. Grinding modes are surface, criss-cross, plunge and pitch, the pitch mode being described as different pitch and same depth. The minimum feeding setting is 0.001 mm.

02 What do H and B mean in the specification?

They are two versions of the longitudinal (X) axis. H uses a box way with a hydraulic cylinder and a 1HP motor, for a table speed of 3~25 m/min. B uses a linear guide way with ball screw and a 1KW AC servo motor, for 1~15 m/min. Vertical and cross axes are the same on both.

03 How big is the working area?

The grinding surface of the table and the maximum grinding surface are both 250 × 500 mm (9.8 × 19.7 in). The maximum distance from spindle center to table is 550 mm (21.7 in), and the rapid power cross feed is 1,100 mm/min.

04 How does the PL-2550CNC compare with the PL-3060CNC?

The PL-3060CNC is the larger sibling, with a 300 × 600 mm (11.8 × 23.6 in) table, a 7.5 HP (5.6 kW) spindle and a 355 × 50 × 127 mm wheel, at 3,000 kg (6,614 lb). The PL-2550CNC has a 3 HP (2.2 kW) spindle and a 180 × 13 × 31.75 mm wheel and weighs 2,500 kg (5,511 lb). Controls and grinding modes are shared.
