Overview

The Bourn & Koch Blanchard 72HAD-120 is the largest rotary surface grinder in the line: a 120 in (3,048 mm) single piece steel magnetic chuck under a 72 in (1,829 mm) grinding wheel, with 144 in (3,658 mm) of maximum swing as standard and 164 in (4,166 mm) as an option.

A wheel that wide is what lets the machine cover such large work. Bourn & Koch fits a CDTXL Bonus Grind segmented Cortland chuck and states that it can grind to the center of a 144” diameter part. Standard grinding horsepower is 200 hp (149.1 kW).

More size does not mean more load. The Blanchard 54HAD-100 is rated 150 hp (111.9 kW) on a 100 in (2,540 mm) chuck, yet both machines carry the same 30,000 lb (13,608 kg). The extra chuck area is for wider parts, or more of them per load, not heavier ones. Net weight is approximately 110,000 lb (49,896 kg), so the building and the foundation have to be settled before the order.

Only the spindle head is servo driven. The drive system is listed as Servo (Z) / Hydraulic (X), with encoder feedback on Z; the fine feed rate is 0.0001 to 0.010 ipm (0.0025 to 0.254 mm/min) and the coarse feed rate 0.001 to 0.100 ipm (0.025 to 2.54 mm/min). The chuck turns at 2.6 - 10.2 rpm. Vertical range is 33 in (838 mm), or 48 in (1,219 mm) or 60 in (1,524 mm) to order.

The base is a heavy duty steel weldment, the column a steel weldment with polymer concrete, and the table body and spindle head are cast iron. A Fanuc CNC control with the Blanchard Grinding HMI is standard, though the page does not give the control model. External coolant systems, custom workholding and increased grinding spindle horsepower are optional.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Largest capacity in the line: 144 in (3,658 mm) maximum swing, with 164 in (4,166 mm) optional
  • 200 hp (149.1 kW) standard grinding horsepower on a 72 in (1,829 mm) wheel
  • 120 in (3,048 mm) single piece steel magnetic chuck
  • CDTXL Bonus Grind segmented chuck that the maker says can grind to the center of a 144” diameter part
  • Fine feed rate of 0.0001 to 0.010 ipm (0.0025 to 0.254 mm/min) on a servo Z-axis with encoder feedback

Limitations

  • Weight capacity is 30,000 lb (13,608 kg), no higher than on the Blanchard 54HAD-100
  • The carriage (X) drive is hydraulic; only Z is servo
  • Net weight of approximately 110,000 lb (49,896 kg) dictates the foundation and the building
  • The control is listed only as Fanuc CNC Control, without a model designation
  • Chuck speed tops out at 10.2 rpm
