Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Monforts KNC 8 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Up to 6,000 mm (236.2 in) between centres on an 800 mm (31.5 in) swing: the Monforts KNC 8 is the long-bed member of the KNC cycle-controlled lathes. Five bed lengths are listed, starting at 2,000 mm (78.7 in), and swing over the cross slide is 610 mm (24.0 in). Like the KNC 5 it can be worked by handwheel or from a program.
Everything is scaled for heavier shafts. The spindle bore is 104 mm (4.1 in), and the drive is 22 kW (29.5 hp) at 100% ED and 30 kW (40.2 hp) at 40% ED, exactly double the KNC 5 rating of 11 kW (14.8 hp). First gear runs 3 to 224 rpm with 2,935 Nm (2,165 lb-ft) at 100% ED and 4,000 Nm (2,950 lb-ft) at 40% ED. Top speed is 2,000 rpm in third gear.
Long work needs support, and the base machine brings only part of it. The tailstock is manual, with an MK6 taper and 300 mm (11.8 in) of quill stroke; a hydraulically actuated quill is optional. Chucks are 400 mm (15.7 in) manual or 315 mm (12.4 in) hydraulic, each with a larger optional version. X travel is 410 mm (16.1 in), and Z travel runs from 1,899 mm (74.8 in) to 5,932 mm (233.5 in) depending on the bed.
Tools sit in a Multifix D quick-change holder for 40 x 40 mm shanks. The option list goes further than on the smaller machine: an 8-position turret with or without driven tools in VDI 50, and a C-axis positioned by an independent servo motor. Control is the R&D cycle control MTC or a Siemens Sinumerik One.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Five bed lengths from 2,000 mm (78.7 in) to 6,000 mm (236.2 in) between centres
- First gear torque of 2,935 Nm (2,165 lb-ft) at 100% ED and 4,000 Nm (2,950 lb-ft) at 40% ED
- Spindle bore of 104 mm (4.1 in) with 800 mm (31.5 in) of swing over the bed
- Handwheel operation and workshop programming on the MTC control, or Siemens Sinumerik One
- Optional 8-position VDI 50 turret with driven tools and a servo-positioned C-axis
Limitations
- Top speed is 2,000 rpm, reached only in third gear with 325 Nm (240 lb-ft) at 100% ED
- The tailstock is manual as standard, on a machine with beds up to 6,000 mm (236.2 in)
- Base tooling is a single Multifix D tool post; a turret is an option
- The shortest bed is 2,000 mm (78.7 in), so short work belongs on the KNC 5

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The distance between centres is 2,000 mm (78.7 in), 3,000 mm (118.1 in), 4,000 mm (157.5 in), 5,000 mm (196.9 in) or 6,000 mm (236.2 in). Z travel for the shortest bed is 1,899 mm (74.8 in) and for the longest 5,932 mm (233.5 in). Swing over the bed is 800 mm (31.5 in).
02
The KNC 5 has 510 mm (20.1 in) of swing over the bed, an 80 mm (3.1 in) spindle bore and an 11 kW (14.8 hp) drive. The KNC 8 has 800 mm (31.5 in) of swing, a 104 mm (4.1 in) bore and 22 kW (29.5 hp) at 100% ED, and its beds start where the smaller machine stops, at 2,000 mm (78.7 in).
03
The overall range is 3 to 2,000 rpm across a mechanical 3-stage gearbox: 3 to 224 rpm in first gear, 9 to 670 rpm in second and 26 to 2,000 rpm in third. Torque at 100% ED falls from 2,935 Nm (2,165 lb-ft) in first gear to 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) in second and 325 Nm (240 lb-ft) in third.
