Johnford SL-120A — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Johnford SL-120A that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Johnford or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package

Overview

Three metres of Z travel put the Johnford SL-120A at the long end of the SL slant-bed range: 3,000 mm (118.1 in) between the 12 in chuck and the end of the stroke, on a bed with Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) of swing.

A slant-bed turret lathe of this length fills a gap. Flat-bed lathes handle three-metre shafts routinely, but with an open carriage and manual-style ergonomics; a 45° bed with a full enclosure, a 12-position turret and a chip conveyor brings production-lathe habits to long parts. Chips fall clear, coolant stays inside, and the turret indexes the next tool without the operator.

Suitable work includes long pump and compressor shafts, oilfield tubulars, extruder screws in blank form, textile and film rolls, and columns or tie bars for presses and moulding machines. The 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) spindle, geared in 2 automatic steps to 3,000 rpm, is the same one fitted to the shortest model of the frame, so the machine is specified for length, not for heavier cutting.

Tailstock travel is 2,700 mm (106.3 in), and with the Y-axis option the Z travel is 2,900 mm (114.2 in). Swing over the cross slide is Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in).

A word on the data. The maker's table prints 17,000 kg for this model with an inch value in the bracket where the pound figure should be, so only the kilogram figure is shown on this page. Length is 7,485 mm (294.7 in).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3,000 mm (118.1 in) of Z travel on a 45° slant bed
  • Tailstock travel of 2,700 mm (106.3 in) with an Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) quill
  • Full enclosure, 12-position turret and chip conveyor on a three-metre lathe
  • Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) spindle bore, Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in) bar capacity
  • Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) swing over the cross slide

Limitations

  • Same 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) spindle as the much shorter SL-70A
  • Machine length of 7,485 mm (294.7 in)
  • The weight in the maker's table carries a wrong bracket; 17,000 kg is the only usable figure
  • Steady rests are optional, and a three-metre shaft needs them

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long is the SL-120A?

Z travel is 3,000 mm (118.1 in) and the machine is 7,485 mm (294.7 in) long. Width and height are 2,430 x 2,510 mm (95.7 x 98.8 in).

02 How much does the SL-120A weigh?

The table gives 17,000 kg. The figure in brackets beside it on the maker's page is an inch value, not pounds, so no pound figure is quoted here. The SL-100A, one size shorter, weighs 16,000 kg (35,200 lb).

03 What spindle does the SL-120A have?

An A2-8 nose (A2-11 optional) with a Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore and Ø160 mm (Ø6.3 in) bearing, 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), 2 step Auto transmission, 3,000 rpm or 2,800 rpm in the optional configuration.

04 Is a big-bore version of the SL-120A available?

Yes, the SL-120B, with a 15 in chuck, a Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in) bore, Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in) bar capacity and a 4 step transmission at 2,000 rpm on the same 3,000 mm (118.1 in) bed.
