Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Monforts KNC 5 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Monforts KNC 5 is a cycle-controlled flat-bed lathe: it can be run by handwheels like a manual machine and switched to workshop programming on its CNC. Swing over the bed is 510 mm (20.1 in), swing over the cross slide 340 mm (13.4 in), and it comes with 1,000 mm (39.4 in), 1,500 mm (59.1 in) or 2,000 mm (78.7 in) between centres.
Monforts aims it at one-off and small series work and at users moving from conventional lathes. The standard control is the R&D cycle control MTC, with servo handwheels that let the operator step into a running cut, cycles for contours, threads and recesses, and a Teach In function that stores a part turned by hand and repeats it. A Siemens Sinumerik One is the alternative.
The headstock is geared. A mechanical 3-stage gearbox splits the 2 to 2,400 rpm range, and the drive is 11 kW (14.8 hp) at 100% ED and 15 kW (20.1 hp) at 40% ED. In first gear, 2 to 266 rpm, that gives 1,489 Nm (1,098 lb-ft) at 100% ED. Third gear covers 21 to 2,400 rpm with 166 Nm (122 lb-ft). The spindle bore is 80 mm (3.1 in).
X travel is 289 mm (11.4 in). Z travel depends on the bed, from 803 mm (31.6 in) to 1,820 mm (71.7 in). The base machine has a Multifix C quick-change tool holder for 32 x 32 mm tools, a manual tailstock with an MK5 taper and 200 mm (7.9 in) of quill stroke, a manual chuck of 250 mm (9.8 in) and a chip conveyor. An 8-position turret with or without driven tools, a hydraulic quill and hydraulic clamping are options.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Runs by handwheel or by program: R&D cycle control MTC with Teach In, or Siemens Sinumerik One
- First gear delivers 1,489 Nm (1,098 lb-ft) at 100% ED from an 11 kW (14.8 hp) drive
- Three bed lengths: 1,000 mm (39.4 in), 1,500 mm (59.1 in) or 2,000 mm (78.7 in) between centres
- Spindle bore of 80 mm (3.1 in) on a 510 mm (20.1 in) swing lathe
- Enclosure with 2 doors, chip conveyor and Multifix C quick-change tool holder in the basic design
Limitations
- Top speed is 2,400 rpm, and only in third gear, where torque is 166 Nm (122 lb-ft) at 100% ED
- The base machine has a single quick-change tool post; the 8-position turret is an option
- Tailstock is manual as standard, with the hydraulically actuated quill an option
- X travel is 289 mm (11.4 in) and swing over the cross slide 340 mm (13.4 in)

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Monforts describes the KNC as combining the advantages of a manual and a CNC turning machine: it is controlled by handwheels in manual mode and can be switched to workshop programming. On the MTC control a part turned by hand can be saved with Teach In and repeated without further input.
02
Swing over the bed is 510 mm (20.1 in) and swing over the cross slide 340 mm (13.4 in). The distance between centres is 1,000 mm (39.4 in), 1,500 mm (59.1 in) or 2,000 mm (78.7 in), with matching Z travels of 803 mm (31.6 in), 1,311 mm (51.6 in) and 1,820 mm (71.7 in). X travel is 289 mm (11.4 in).
03
The 3-stage gearbox gives 2 to 266 rpm, 7 to 768 rpm and 21 to 2,400 rpm. Drive power is 11 kW (14.8 hp) at 100% ED. Torque at 100% ED is 1,489 Nm (1,098 lb-ft) in first gear, 522 Nm (385 lb-ft) in second and 166 Nm (122 lb-ft) in third.
04
The basic design uses the R&D cycle control MTC, a workshop-oriented control that Monforts offers only on the KNC series. A Siemens control system is listed as optional equipment, and the technical data names it as Sinumerik One.
05
Yes, as an option. The basic design has a Multifix C quick-change tool holder for 32 x 32 mm turning tools. Monforts lists an 8-position turret with or without driven tools in VDI 30, and a 4-sided turret head without tool drive, as optional equipment.
