Overview

The Momentum MVL-10HD is a compact vertical turning lathe with a Ø1,005 mm (39.56 in) table, Ø1,100 mm (43.30 in) of swing and turning diameter, and 900 mm (35.43 in) of turning height with the B79 holder. The table takes 5,000 kg (11,000 lb). It is sold in three versions: the MVL-10HD-SR is the 2-axis lathe, and the MVL-10iM-SR and MVL-10M-SR add a milling spindle.

Unlike the MVL-12HD, MVL-15, MVL-16 and MVL-20, this model has a fixed cross rail. There is no rail travel, so the 1,000 mm (39.37 in) ram stroke does all the vertical work and the 1,075 mm (42.32 in) from the table to the clamp pitch line is a fixed dimension. A short part therefore means a long ram extension, which is worth weighing if most of the work is low rings and discs.

What the small table buys is speed. The table runs 0-137 rpm in low gear and 137-550 rpm in high gear, against 80-345 rpm in high gear on the MVL-12HD, while the main table motor is the same 55 / 45 kW (73.7 / 60.3 hp). Maximum table torque is 12,000 Nm (8,850 lb-ft). X travel runs from -570 to +725 mm (-22.44 to +28.54 in), so the tool can cross the table centre, and rapids are 10 m/min (393.7 in/min).

On the milling versions the spindle is a Dual Contact CAT-50 rated 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 25 hp). The two differ in torque and in how the table is indexed. The -M gives 820 Nm (604 ft-lb), a two-range spindle of 0-1,570 and 486-3,000 rpm, and a Cf axis driven by its own 7 kW (9.4 hp) motor through a 360:1 reduction. The -iM gives 620 Nm (455 ft-lb) and positions the table through the main motor as a Cs axis. The 2-axis machine holds 16 tools; the milling versions hold 15 plus 1 cover.

Every version needs a 3-phase 460 V supply with a 175 A main breaker and 139 kVA, carries a 592 L (157 gal) coolant tank and weighs 18,000 kg (39,000 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Table speed up to 550 rpm in high gear, with the 55 / 45 kW (73.7 / 60.3 hp) main table motor
  • Ø1,100 mm (43.30 in) turning diameter and 900 mm (35.43 in) turning height on a 5,000 kg (11,000 lb) table
  • 254 x 254 mm (10 x 10 in) ram with 1,000 mm (39.37 in) of stroke
  • Milling versions carry a Dual Contact CAT-50 spindle of 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 25 hp)
  • The -M version has a Cf axis with its own 7 kW (9.4 hp) motor and 360:1 reduction

Limitations

  • The cross rail is fixed, so all height adjustment comes from the 1,000 mm (39.37 in) ram stroke
  • Maximum table torque is 12,000 Nm (8,850 lb-ft), against 19,000 Nm (14,014 lb-ft) on the MVL-12HD
  • The 2-axis MVL-10HD-SR has no milling spindle; milling needs the -iM or -M version
  • Requires a 175 A main breaker at 460 V and a floor for 18,000 kg (39,000 lb)

Best For

Rings, flanges and discs up to Ø1,100 mm (43.30 in) Smaller-diameter work that benefits from up to 550 rpm at the table Turn-mill parts on the -M version with its Cf axis Workpieces up to 5,000 kg (11,000 lb)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the MVL-10HD-SR, MVL-10iM-SR and MVL-10M-SR?

The MVL-10HD-SR is the 2-axis turning machine with a 16-tool changer. The -iM and -M versions add a Dual Contact CAT-50 milling spindle of 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 25 hp) and hold 15 tools plus 1 cover. The -M has 820 Nm (604 ft-lb) of milling torque and a Cf axis with a 7 kW (9.4 hp) motor; the -iM has 620 Nm (455 ft-lb) and uses Cs positioning via the main motor.

02 Does the MVL-10HD have a moving cross rail?

No. The cross rail row reads fixed, with no cross rail travel. Vertical positioning comes entirely from the ram, which is 254 x 254 mm (10 x 10 in) in section with a 1,000 mm (39.37 in) stroke. Maximum turning height is 900 mm (35.43 in) with the B79 holder.

03 How fast does the MVL-10HD table turn?

The table has two gear ranges: 0-137 rpm in low gear and 137-550 rpm in high gear. It is driven by a 55 / 45 kW (73.7 / 60.3 hp) main table motor and delivers up to 12,000 Nm (8,850 lb-ft) of torque. The high range is useful for finishing smaller diameters and bores at a proper surface speed.

04 How does the MVL-10HD compare with the MVL-12HD?

The MVL-10HD turns Ø1,100 mm (43.30 in) and carries 5,000 kg (11,000 lb) on a fixed cross rail. The MVL-12HD turns Ø1,600 mm (62.99 in), carries 8,000 kg (17,637 lb), and weighs 28,850 kg (63,603 lb) against 18,000 kg (39,000 lb) for the MVL-10HD. Both share the 55 / 45 kW (73.7 / 60.3 hp) main table motor and the 1,000 mm (39.37 in) ram stroke.

05 What power supply does the MVL-10HD need?

A 3-phase 460 V, 60 Hz supply with a 175 A main breaker; the table gives 139 kVA. The coolant tank holds 592 L (157 gal) and the machine weighs 18,000 kg (39,000 lb), so the floor and the lifting plan need checking along with the electrical service.
