Overview

The Momentum MVL-20 is a large vertical turning lathe: Ø2,500 mm (98.42 in) of swing and turning diameter, a Ø2,000 mm (78.74 in) table, 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) of table load and 40,900 Nm (30,168 lb-ft) of maximum table torque. Turning height is 1,810 mm (71.25 in) with the B79 holder.

The step up from the MVL-16 is bigger than the model numbers suggest. The MVL-16 carries 10,000 kg (22,046 lb) and weighs 36,800 kg (81,130 lb); the MVL-20 carries half as much again and weighs 54,000 kg (119,049 lb). Table torque rises to 40,900 Nm (30,168 lb-ft) and table speed falls to 0-45 rpm in low gear and 45-220 rpm in high gear, which is the right direction for heavy, interrupted cuts on large castings and forgings.

Several things do not grow with the table. The ram is a 254 x 254 mm (10 x 10 in) section with a 1,000 mm (39.37 in) stroke, tool clamping is 8 ton, 77.5 kN (17,422 lbf), on a 24-tooth curvic coupling, and the standard main motor is 55 / 45 kW (73.7 / 60.3 hp). A 60 / 75 kW (80.5 / 100.6 hp) motor is the option, and on a table this size it deserves a serious look. What does scale is the cross rail: 1,030 mm (40.55 in) of travel in 4 steps and 5 positions, with 1,985 mm (78.15 in) from the table to the clamp pitch line.

X travel is -1,300 to +1,500 mm (-51.18 to +59.05 in), with rapids of 10 m/min (393.7 in/min). Tool capacity is 16 on the 2-axis MVL-20-SR, and 15 plus 1 cover on the MVL-20iM-SR and MVL-20M-SR, which add a 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 25 hp) Dual Contact CAT-50 milling spindle. The control is a FANUC 0i-TF Plus and the coolant tank holds 592 L (157 gal).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø2,500 mm (98.42 in) turning diameter on a Ø2,000 mm (78.74 in) table
  • 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) table load
  • 40,900 Nm (30,168 lb-ft) of maximum table torque
  • Cross rail travel of 1,030 mm (40.55 in) in 5 positions, with 1,810 mm (71.25 in) of turning height
  • Optional 60 / 75 kW (80.5 / 100.6 hp) main motor

Limitations

  • Table speed tops out at 220 rpm in high gear
  • Ram stroke is 1,000 mm (39.37 in), the same as on the far smaller MVL-10HD, so deep bores still depend on the cross rail position
  • The milling spindle on -iM and -M versions is 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 25 hp), so milling capacity is modest next to the turning capacity
  • Weighs 54,000 kg (119,049 lb), which governs foundation, crane and transport planning

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big a part can the MVL-20 take?

Up to Ø2,500 mm (98.42 in) in swing and turning diameter, 1,810 mm (71.25 in) in turning height with the B79 holder, and 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) on the Ø2,000 mm (78.74 in) table. Parts near the full swing extend beyond the table, so workholding has to be planned for the overhang.

02 How does the MVL-20 differ from the MVL-16?

The MVL-20 turns Ø2,500 mm (98.42 in) on a Ø2,000 mm (78.74 in) table and carries 15,000 kg (33,069 lb). The MVL-16 turns Ø2,000 mm (78.74 in) on a Ø1,600 mm (62.99 in) table and carries 10,000 kg (22,046 lb). Machine weight is 54,000 kg (119,049 lb) for the MVL-20 against 36,800 kg (81,130 lb) for the MVL-16. Both list the same standard and optional main motors.

03 How does the cross rail work on the MVL-20?

The cross rail has 1,030 mm (40.55 in) of travel divided into 4 steps, giving 5 positions. It is set for the height of the job, and the ram then provides 1,000 mm (39.37 in) of Z stroke for cutting. The height from the table to the clamp pitch line is 1,985 mm (78.15 in).

04 What power supply does the MVL-20 need?

The power row lists a 3-phase 460 V, 60 Hz supply with a 175 A main breaker and 139 kVA. The table gives a single set of supply figures while also listing an optional 60 / 75 kW (80.5 / 100.6 hp) main motor, so confirm the electrical requirement for the motor actually ordered.

05 What tooling does the MVL-20 use?

Turning attachments clamp into the 254 x 254 mm (10 x 10 in) ram on a 24-tooth curvic coupling with 8 ton, 77.5 kN (17,422 lbf), of force. The 2-axis version holds 16 tools. The -iM and -M versions hold 15 tools plus 1 cover and use Dual Contact CAT-50 tooling in the milling spindle, with 820 Nm (604 ft-lb) on the -M and 620 Nm (455 ft-lb) on the -iM.
