Overview

The Momentum MFA 60 is a heavy flat-bed CNC lathe with 1,560 mm (60 in) of swing over the bed, 2,150-14,150 mm (84.6-557 in) between centers in 1,000 mm steps, and 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) of workpiece weight between centers as standard. It is built for long, heavy shaft and roll work, and for large-bore pipe when one of the bigger spindle bores is ordered. In the same family, the MLD 50 swings 1,265 mm (50 in) and the MLC 40 swings 1,020 mm (40 in).

What separates the MFA 60 from the MLD 50 is the bed more than the swing. The MFA 60 has a four-way bed, 1,020 mm (40.1 in) wide with an auxiliary guide at 1,170 mm (46 in), and the turret can pass the steady rests. The MLD 50 is listed with a two-way bed on which the turret cannot pass them. On a long shaft held in two or three steadies, that decides whether the whole length can be turned in one setup or the steadies have to be moved.

The cross slide comes in two lengths, and the choice trades diameter for reach. The half-length slide gives 600 mm (23.6 in) of X travel and 1,215 mm (47.8 in) of swing over the cross slide. The full-length slide gives 900 mm (35.4 in) of X and 1,110 mm (43.7 in) of swing.

The standard spindle has a 6 in bore on an A2-11 nose and runs to 585 rpm, with 800 rpm as an option. Larger bores are options and each one lowers the top speed: 450 rpm with the 9 in bore, 400 rpm at 12 in, 300 rpm at 14 in, 250 rpm at 16 in and 220 rpm at 21 in. The main motor is a FANUC αiI 40 rated 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp), with an αiI 50 at 45 / 55 kW (60.3 / 73.8 hp) as the option.

Z rapids are 6 m/min on beds to 5 m and 5 m/min (196.9 in/min) from 6 m; X is 6 m/min (236.2 in/min). The control is the FANUC 0i-TF Plus. Machine weight is 19,200 kg (42,328 lb) at 2,000 mm center distance, plus 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) for every additional 1,000 mm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Four-way bed lets the turret pass the steady rests, so long shafts can be turned end to end without moving supports
  • 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) between centers as standard, with 20,000 kg or 30,000 kg as options
  • Spindle bore options from the standard 6 in up to 21 in for large pipe and tube
  • Center distances from 2,150 to 14,150 mm (84.6-557 in) in 1,000 mm steps
  • Full-length cross slide option gives 900 mm (35.4 in) of X travel
  • Main motor of 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp), or 45 / 55 kW (60.3 / 73.8 hp) as an option

Limitations

  • Top speed is 585 rpm with the 6 in bore (800 rpm optional) and falls to 220 rpm with the 21 in bore, so small diameters cannot reach high surface speeds
  • Rapids are 6 m/min, and Z drops to 5 m/min (196.9 in/min) on beds from 6 m, so repositioning along a long bed is slow
  • The standard turrets are the H4-350 or V12 hydraulic; a BMT-75 turret, with or without Y axis, is an option
  • Weighs 19,200 kg (42,328 lb) at 2,000 mm center distance plus 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) per extra 1,000 mm, which sets the foundation requirement
06

Best For

Long shafts, rolls and spindles up to 14,150 mm (557 in) between centers Heavy workpieces up to 15,000 kg (33,069 lb), or 30,000 kg with the option Large-bore pipe and tube through the optional 16 in or 21 in spindle bores Shaft work in steady rests, where the turret must pass the supports

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the MFA 60 and the MLD 50?

Size and bed design. The MFA 60 swings 1,560 mm (60 in) over a four-way bed where the turret can pass the steady rests, and carries 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) between centers. The MLD 50 has a two-way bed where the turret cannot pass steady rests, a 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) main motor against the 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) of the MFA 60, and bore options up to 16 in where the MFA 60 goes to 21 in.

02 How fast does the MFA 60 spindle run with each bore size?

With the standard 6 in bore the spindle reaches 585 rpm, or 800 rpm as an option. The optional larger bores are slower: 450 rpm for the 9 in bore, 400 rpm for 12 in, 300 rpm for 14 in, 250 rpm for 16 in and 220 rpm for 21 in. Pick the smallest bore that passes the work, because every step up gives away speed.

03 Which cross slide should I choose on the MFA 60?

It depends on whether diameter or X reach matters more. The half-length slide has 600 mm (23.6 in) of X travel and leaves 1,215 mm (47.8 in) of swing over the cross slide. The full-length slide extends X travel to 900 mm (35.4 in) and reduces the swing over the slide to 1,110 mm (43.7 in). The slide itself is 420 mm (16.5 in) wide on a 950 mm (37.4 in) carriage.

04 What turrets are available on the MFA 60?

The standard choice is an H4-350 or a V12 hydraulic turret. A BMT-75 turret is optional and can be ordered with or without a Y axis. Tool shank size is 32 x 32 mm (1.25 in). The table does not list live-tool speed or power for the BMT-75 option, so ask for those figures if milling matters.

05 How heavy is the MFA 60?

19,200 kg (42,328 lb) at 2,000 mm center distance, and 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) more for each additional 1,000 mm of bed. Add the workpiece on top of that: 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) between centers as standard, or 20,000 kg or 30,000 kg with the options. The foundation has to be designed for the bed length actually ordered.
