Overview

The Momentum MVL-16 is a vertical turning lathe for work up to Ø2,000 mm (78.74 in), with a Ø1,600 mm (62.99 in) table rated for 10,000 kg (22,046 lb) and 1,605 mm (63.18 in) of turning height with the B79 holder. Maximum table torque is 24,000 Nm (17,701 lb-ft).

The MVL-16 is listed with an optional larger main motor. The standard table drive is 55 / 45 kW (73.7 / 60.3 hp), and a 60 / 75 kW (80.5 / 100.6 hp) motor is the option. Table speed is 0-65 rpm in low gear and 65-280 rpm in high gear. At diameters of this size the cut is limited by torque far more often than by speed, so whether the optional motor is worth having depends on how much of the work is heavy roughing in the low range.

X travel runs from -1,020 to +1,165 mm (-40.15 to +45.87 in). The negative side is what allows the tool to cross the centre line for facing to centre and for boring on the far side of a bore. Z is the 1,000 mm (39.37 in) stroke of a 254 x 254 mm (10 x 10 in) ram, and the cross rail adds 750 mm (29.52 in) of travel in 3 steps, with 4 positions, under a table-to-clamp pitch line height of 1,780 mm (70.08 in).

The machine comes as the 2-axis MVL-16-SR or with milling as the MVL-16iM-SR and MVL-16M-SR. The milling spindle is a Dual Contact CAT-50 of 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 25 hp). On the -M it has two ranges, 0-1,570 and 486-3,000 rpm, with 820 Nm (604 ft-lb), and the table becomes a Cf axis with its own 7 kW (9.4 hp) motor and 360:1 reduction. The -iM has 620 Nm (455 ft-lb) and uses Cs positioning via the main motor.

Plan the site around 36,800 kg (81,130 lb) of machine and a 3-phase 460 V supply with a 175 A main breaker and 139 kVA. If the optional main motor is ordered, confirm the supply figures for that configuration, since the table gives one set.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø2,000 mm (78.74 in) swing and turning diameter with a 10,000 kg (22,046 lb) table load
  • 24,000 Nm (17,701 lb-ft) of maximum table torque
  • Optional 60 / 75 kW (80.5 / 100.6 hp) main motor in place of the standard 55 / 45 kW (73.7 / 60.3 hp)
  • Cross rail travel of 750 mm (29.52 in) over 4 positions, plus a 1,000 mm (39.37 in) ram stroke
  • X travel from -1,020 to +1,165 mm (-40.15 to +45.87 in) lets the tool work past the table centre

Limitations

  • Table speed is limited to 280 rpm in high gear, so small-diameter features on a large part run slowly
  • The Ø1,600 mm (62.99 in) table is smaller than the Ø2,000 mm (78.74 in) swing, so the largest parts overhang it
  • The larger main motor is an option; the standard machine has the 55 / 45 kW (73.7 / 60.3 hp) drive
  • Weighs 36,800 kg (81,130 lb), which sets foundation and rigging requirements

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What main motor options does the MVL-16 have?

The standard main table motor is 55 / 45 kW (73.7 / 60.3 hp). A 60 / 75 kW (80.5 / 100.6 hp) motor is listed as an option. Either way the table has a low gear of 0-65 rpm and a high gear of 65-280 rpm, and the listed maximum table torque is 24,000 Nm (17,701 lb-ft). The table does not give a separate torque figure for the optional motor.

02 Where does the MVL-16 sit between the MVL-15 and the MVL-20?

The MVL-15 turns Ø1,600 mm (62.99 in) and carries 8,000 kg (17,637 lb). The MVL-16 turns Ø2,000 mm (78.74 in) and carries 10,000 kg (22,046 lb). The MVL-20 turns Ø2,500 mm (98.42 in), carries 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) and weighs 54,000 kg (119,049 lb) against 36,800 kg (81,130 lb) for the MVL-16.

03 How much vertical adjustment does the MVL-16 have?

Two things combine. The cross rail travels 750 mm (29.52 in) in 3 steps, giving 4 positions, and the ram has a 1,000 mm (39.37 in) stroke. Maximum turning height is 1,605 mm (63.18 in) with the B79 holder and the height from the table to the clamp pitch line is 1,780 mm (70.08 in).

04 What are the site requirements for the MVL-16?

The machine weighs 36,800 kg (81,130 lb). The power row lists 3-phase 460 V at 60 Hz, a 175 A main breaker and 139 kVA, and the coolant tank holds 592 L (157 gal). With a table load of up to 10,000 kg (22,046 lb) on top of the machine weight, the foundation should be designed for the loaded machine.

05 What is the difference between the -M and -iM versions of the MVL-16?

Milling torque and table indexing. The -M spindle delivers 820 Nm (604 ft-lb) across 0-1,570 rpm in low gear and 486-3,000 rpm in high gear, and its Cf axis has a dedicated 7 kW (9.4 hp) motor with 360:1 reduction. The -iM delivers 620 Nm (455 ft-lb) and positions the table as a Cs axis through the main motor. Both hold 15 tools plus 1 cover.
