Overview

The Momentum MLC 40 is a flat-bed CNC lathe with 1,020 mm (40 in) of swing over the bed and 610 mm (24 in) over the cross slide, offered in center distances from 1,200 to 12,200 mm (47.2-480.3 in) in 1,000 mm steps. It carries 8,000 kg (17,637 lb) between centers, or 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) with the option, and runs a FANUC 0i-TF Plus control.

Among the Momentum flat-beds this is the one for long work that is not especially large in diameter. The MLD 50 swings 1,265 mm (50 in) and the MFA 60 swings 1,560 mm (60 in), and both are heavier machines. The MLC 40 weighs 11,000 kg (24,250 lb) at 1,000 mm center distance and gains 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) for each extra 1,000 mm.

Turret choice is wider here than on the MLD 50 and MFA 60, and it is where milling capability is decided. Standard is an H4-250 or a V12 hydraulic turret. The options are an H4-350, a BMT-65 with Y axis, or a BMT75 without Y axis. So off-centre milling on this model means the BMT-65 specifically. X travel is 530 mm (20.8 in) and tool shanks are 32 x 32 mm (1.25 in).

A FANUC αiI 30 motor rated 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) drives a spindle with a 6 in bore as standard, good for 600 rpm or 800 rpm with the speed option. Bores of 9 in, 12 in and 14.5 in can be ordered, at 450 rpm, 400 rpm and 300 rpm respectively. The stronger αiI 40 motor, 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp), is an option.

The axis-drive row shows how the long beds are handled: Z uses a FANUC αiF22 motor of 4 kW to 7 m, and on 8-12 m beds an αiF40 of 6 kW (8.0 hp) working through rack and pinion. Rapid traverse is 6 m/min (236.2 in/min). The tailstock has a 185 mm (7.2 in) rotating quill with 250 mm (9.8 in) of travel and an MT6 center; a 250 mm (9.8 in) quill is optional.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Center distances from 1,200 to 12,200 mm (47.2-480.3 in) in 1,000 mm steps on a 1,020 mm (40 in) swing
  • 8,000 kg (17,637 lb) between centers, or 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) with the option
  • Y-axis milling is available through the optional BMT-65 turret
  • 6 in spindle bore as standard, with 9 in, 12 in and 14.5 in bores as options
  • Rotating tailstock quill of 185 mm (7.2 in), with a 250 mm (9.8 in) quill optional

Limitations

  • Swing over the cross slide is 610 mm (24 in), well under the 1,020 mm (40 in) over the bed, so shaft diameter is limited by the slide
  • Spindle speed peaks at 600 rpm (800 rpm optional) and drops to 300 rpm with the 14.5 in bore
  • The Y axis comes only with the BMT-65 turret; the BMT75 option is listed without Y
  • Rapids of 6 m/min (236.2 in/min) make for slow repositioning on the longer beds

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the MLC 40 compare with the MLD 50?

The MLC 40 is the smaller machine. It swings 1,020 mm (40 in) over the bed and 610 mm (24 in) over the cross slide, with 530 mm (20.8 in) of X travel and 8,000 kg (17,637 lb) between centers. The MLD 50 swings 1,265 mm (50 in) over the bed and 850 mm (33.4 in) over the cross slide, with 730 mm (28.7 in) of X travel and 9,000 kg (19,841 lb) between centers. Both use the same 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) main motor and reach 600 rpm with the 6 in bore.

02 What spindle bores are available on the MLC 40?

The standard bore is 6 in on an A2-11 spindle nose. The options are a 9 in bore on an A2-15 nose and 12 in or 14.5 in bores on an A2-20 nose. Top speed falls as the bore grows: 600 rpm (800 rpm optional) at 6 in, then 450 rpm, 400 rpm and 300 rpm for the three larger sizes.

03 Can the MLC 40 do Y-axis milling?

Yes, with the right turret. The standard H4-250 and V12 hydraulic turrets are for turning. Of the options, the BMT-65 is listed with a Y axis and the BMT75 without one. The table gives no live-tool speed or power for either, so request those figures before specifying a milling job.

04 How is the Z axis driven on long MLC 40 beds?

The servo row lists a FANUC αiF22 motor of 4 kW for Z on beds to 7 m. On 8-12 m beds the motor is an αiF40 of 6 kW (8.0 hp) and the drive is rack and pinion. The X axis uses an αiF22 of 4 kW (5.4 hp) at every length. Rapid traverse is 6 m/min (236.2 in/min).

05 What does the MLC 40 weigh?

11,000 kg (24,250 lb) at 1,000 mm center distance, plus 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) for each additional 1,000 mm of bed. The bed is 560 mm (22 in) wide with an auxiliary guide at 710 mm (27.9 in). Work out the weight for the bed length on the order before planning the foundation and the lift.
