Komo Fusion 5-Axis — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Komo Fusion 5-Axis that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Komo or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

Among Komo's five-axis routers the Fusion 5-Axis is the heavy one. The Komo Fusion 5-Axis has a 20 hp (15 kW) liquid-cooled spindle, accepts tools up to 11 in (280 mm) long and, according to Komo's introduction, comes with a choice of 36 in or 48 in of Z travel.

The spindle is the only one in the range limited to 22,000 rpm. It is a four-pole HSK 63F unit, and Komo notes that other spindle options are available. More power at a slightly lower top speed points to heavier cuts in aluminum and dense composites, both of which are on the recommended list along with wood and plastics.

Long tools are the second distinguishing figure. A five-axis head often has to reach down beside a part, and the changer here takes tools of 11 in (280 mm), more than twice the 5 in (127 mm) limit of the Xtreme 5-Axis. It holds 15 tools, or 30 with an optional second 15 station changer.

For accuracy and rigidity in the rotary axes Komo sells three options, and they are worth deciding on before the order. A and C encoders are rotary encoders that tighten the repeatability of both axes. A and C brakes are hydraulic and stiffen the head during indexed cuts. The C distributor lets the C axis turn continuously without unwinding. The axes rotate at 82.5 degrees/sec, and X and Y traverse at 3,150 ipm (80 m/min) with 205 in/sec² acceleration.

Tables are 60 in x 96 in (1,524 mm x 2,438 mm), 60 in x 120 in (1,524 mm x 3,048 mm) and 60 in x 144 in (1,524 mm x 3,658 mm). Confirm the Z travel for the size you order, because the data block on Komo's page does not repeat the figures from the introduction.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 20 hp (15 kW) four-pole, liquid-cooled HSK 63F spindle as standard
  • Tools up to 11 in (280 mm) long in the changer
  • Choice of 36 in or 48 in of Z travel, as stated in Komo's introduction
  • X and Y traverse of 3,150 ipm (80 m/min) with 205 in/sec² acceleration
  • Optional rotary encoders, hydraulic brakes and a continuous-rotation distributor for the A and C axes

Limitations

  • Spindle speed tops out at 22,000 rpm, below the 24,000 rpm of the Fusion XL 5-Axis
  • A and C encoders, brakes and the C distributor are all options
  • Komo's data block gives no A or C rotation range for this model and does not confirm the Z travel stated in its introduction
  • Z traverse is 735 ipm (18.7 m/min), the slowest linear axis on the machine

Best For

Five-axis machining of aluminum and composite parts Deep parts that need long-reach tools Indexed five-axis cuts that benefit from hydraulic axis brakes Tall formed parts within the 36 in or 48 in Z travel

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How much Z travel does the Fusion 5-Axis have?

Komo's introduction to the model states a choice of 36 in or 48 in of Z travel, and says the machine was developed for customers who need more Z travel than a Fusion XL, which has 12 in (305 mm). The technical data block on the same page does not repeat those figures, so have Komo confirm the travel in writing for the size ordered.

02 What spindle does the Fusion 5-Axis use?

One Hiteco or HSD spindle is standard: 20 hp (15 kW), four-pole and liquid cooled, with an HSK 63F taper and up to 22,000 rpm, fully programmable. Komo notes that other spindle options are available.

03 What do the A and C axis options do?

There are three. A and C encoders are rotary encoders that increase the repeatability tolerance of the two axes. A and C brakes are hydraulic and add rigidity to indexing operations. The C distributor is a rotary distributor that allows the C axis to rotate continuously without unwinding. The axes move at 82.5 degrees/sec.

04 How does it differ from the Fusion XL 5-Axis?

Komo calls the Fusion XL 5-Axis a lighter duty machine than the standard Fusion 5-Axis. The Fusion XL 5-Axis has an 18.10 hp (13.5 kW) spindle running up to 24,000 rpm, where this model has 20 hp (15 kW) and up to 22,000 rpm. Table sizes, tool capacity and traverse rates are the same in both data blocks.
