Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Thermwood Model 70 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Thermwood Model 70 is a moving-gantry 5-axis CNC router for work that arrives on large, heavy fixtures. Its fixed table is 1.5 in (38 mm) thick solid aluminum, 10 feet across, in four sizes from 10'x5' (3.0m x 1.5m) to 10'x20' (3.0m x 6.1m). Thermwood positions it for aerospace and composite applications, and for trimming thermoformed and fiberglass parts.
The table is what separates it from Thermwood's moving-table five-axis machines. Nothing on the table moves, so a layup tool or trim fixture weighing far more than the part can stay put while the gantry travels over it. Table extensions may be added up to a total of 100' (30m) for long tooling.
Height is the other figure to plan around. An extended Z axis is available up to 60 in (1,500 mm), and the machine itself stands 155 in (4.0 m) tall and 175 in (4.5 m) wide. Length runs from 127 in (3.2 m) with the 10'x5' table to 307 in (7.8 m) with the 10'x20' table. Check the building's clear height and door before ordering. Thermwood's own documents give different figures for the standard Z stroke, so have the travel written on the quotation.
At the head, the spindle is 12 HP (9 kW) with a 3,000-24,000 RPM range, on what Thermwood calls an impact resistant five axis head: a positive locating joint that reduces the force on the head in a collision and the need for realignment afterwards. Anyone who has crashed a five-axis head into a fixture will see the value. A continuous C axis is optional, and so is a 5 axis chip collection hood, which needs 1300 CFM of extraction that the buyer supplies.
Tool changing is a 4 position automatic tool changing system, with a 10 or 12 position rotary automatic tool changer as the larger option.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1.5 in (38 mm) thick fixed solid aluminum table takes large, heavy fixtures without moving them
- Tables from 10'x5' (3.0m x 1.5m) to 10'x20' (3.0m x 6.1m), with extensions up to a total of 100' (30m)
- Impact resistant five axis head reduces damage and realignment after a collision
- Extended Z axis available up to 60 in (1,500 mm) for tall moulds and patterns
- Automatic lubrication system is a standard feature
Limitations
- Stands 155 in (4.0 m) tall and 175 in (4.5 m) wide, so building height and access need checking
- The 5 axis chip collection hood is optional and needs 1300 CFM from a collector that is not included
- Thermwood's documents disagree on the standard Z stroke and on the optional spindle rating
- Continuous C axis and the 10 or 12 position rotary automatic tool changer are options

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Thermwood says it is designed for aerospace and composite applications that use large and heavy fixtures. Its brochure calls the M70 a heavy duty, high speed five-axis CNC router specifically developed for three dimensional applications, and names production trimming of thermoformed, composite and fiberglass parts and the machining of patterns and molds.
02
Four: 10'x5' (3.0m x 1.5m), 10'x10' (3.0m x 3.0m), 10'x15' (3.0m x 4.6m) and 10'x20' (3.0m x 6.1m). Table extensions may be added up to a total of 100' (30m). Every size uses the 1.5 in (38 mm) thick fixed solid aluminum table.
03
That depends on the Z axis ordered. An extended Z axis is available up to 60 in (1,500 mm). Thermwood's brochure, its quick brochure and its product page do not agree on the standard stroke, so this page does not state one. Ask for the Z travel and the daylight under the head in writing.
04
Thermwood describes it as a positive locating joint between the axis 5 arm and the rest of the machine. In a collision it decreases the amount of force applied to the head, diminishes the need for realignment, and reduces fixture and spindle damage. It is a standard feature of the Model 70.
05
Approximate overall dimensions are 155 in (4.0 m) high and 175 in (4.5 m) wide for every table size. Length is 127 in (3.2 m) with the 10'x5' table and 307 in (7.8 m) with the 10'x20' table. If the chip collection hood is ordered, allow for ducting and a collector that delivers 1300 CFM at 30 in (760 mm) WG.
