Overview

The Johnford ST-70A puts the fast A spindle on the longest bed of the small ST frame: 1,600 mm (63 in) of Z travel with a top speed of 3,000 rpm.

Long and fast is a particular combination. It suits shafts of modest diameter, the kind that fit a 304 mm (12 in) chuck or come from 91 mm (3.6 in) bar, where surface speed needs rpm and the part is long enough to want a tailstock. The tailstock travels 1,300 mm (51.2 in); its quill is Ø125 mm (4.9 in), MT#5, with 125 mm (4.9 in) of stroke.

On slender work the tailstock will not be enough by itself, and the accessory list has manual or hydraulic self-centering steady rests as options. A sub-spindle or counter-spindle in place of the tailstock is another listed option, which turns the machine into a shaft lathe that can finish both ends.

The spindle motor is 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) with an Auto Hi-Lo transmission. Swing is 790 mm (31.1 in) over the bed and 600 mm (23.6 in) over the cross slide. At 6,482 x 2,290 mm (255.2 x 90.2 in) the footprint is slightly wider than that of the two shorter A models, and the weight is 13,100 kg (28,820 lb).
