Overview

The Johnford ST-80B is where the ST series changes frame. Z travel goes to 2,000 mm (78.7 in), and with it come a larger swing, heavier axis drives and a much bigger tailstock than the short ST-70B has.

The figures side by side: the ST-70B swings 600 mm (23.6 in) over the cross slide, has 4 kW servo motors and a Ø125 mm (4.9 in) MT#5 quill. The ST-80B swings 700 mm (27.6 in) over the cross slide and 920 mm (36.2 in) over the bed, drives X and Z with 7 kW motors and supports the work on a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) quill with an MT#7 taper and 150 mm (5.9 in) of travel. X travel grows to 370 mm (14.6 in).

One thing gets slower. Rapid traverse on this frame is 10 m/min on X and 12 m/min on Z, which is the price of moving a heavier carriage along a longer bed.

The spindle is the A2-11 B unit. It has a 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 116 mm (4.6 in) of bar capacity, four automatic speeds and 2,000 rpm, with 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) as standard and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) as an option. The machine weighs 15,000 kg (33,000 lb), the lightest of the long-bed ST lathes.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What changes between the ST-70B and the ST-80B?

More than length. The ST-70B has 1,600 mm (63 in) of Z travel, 4 kW axis motors and a Ø125 mm (4.9 in) MT#5 tailstock quill. The ST-80B has 2,000 mm (78.7 in), 7 kW motors, a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) MT#7 quill and 700 mm (27.6 in) of swing over the cross slide.

02 How fast are the axes of the ST-80B?

Rapid traverse is 10 m/min on X, 12 m/min on Z and 10 m/min on the optional Y axis. The X and Z servo motors are 7 kW each; the optional Y-axis motor is 3 kW.

03 What is the tailstock of the ST-80B like?

It is a programmable hydraulic tailstock with rotary quill. Quill diameter is Ø200 mm (7.9 in), quill travel 150 mm (5.9 in), taper MT#7, and the tailstock body travels 1,700 mm (66.9 in).

04 What are the dimensions and weight of the ST-80B?

7,412 x 2,504 x 2,895 mm (291.8 x 98.6 x 114 in) and 15,000 kg (33,000 lb). The same length with the C spindle, the ST-80C, weighs 15,300 kg (33,660 lb).
