Johnford SL-80B — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Johnford SL-80B that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Johnford or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The Johnford SL-80B is a two-metre big-bore lathe: 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z travel, a 15 in chuck and a spindle bore of Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in) that passes Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in) stock.

Pipe threading shows what the combination is for. A joint of pipe or a tubular blank is loaded through the bore until the end to be machined stands in front of the chuck. The 12-position turret then faces, bores, turns the seal diameter and cuts the thread in one cycle, at spindle speeds well under the 2,000 rpm maximum. When the part is shorter than two metres it can instead run between chuck and tailstock, which travels 1,700 mm (66.9 in), and be machined along its length.

Thread cutting at large diameter needs a spindle that holds speed under load at low rpm. The 4 step transmission and the Ø180 mm (Ø7.1 in) spindle bearing serve that purpose, with 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) at the motor. The nose is A2-11.

For coolant, the standard is an external supply at 4 bar. Boring and threading inside a tube benefit from the optional high pressure supply through the turret, 20 bar or above with cartridge filtration, which flushes chips out of the bore.

Bed data are those of the frame: Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) over the bed, Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) over the cross slide, 295 mm (11.6 in) of X. The machine is 6,930 mm (272.8 in) long and weighs 15,000 kg (33,000 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in) bar capacity with 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z travel
  • 4 step transmission and A2-11 spindle for low-speed threading
  • Tailstock travel of 1,700 mm (66.9 in), Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) quill
  • 15 in chuck and Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) swing over the cross slide
  • Optional coolant through the turret at 20 bar or above

Limitations

  • External coolant at 4 bar is the standard supply
  • Top speed of 2,000 rpm, against 3,000 rpm on the SL-80A
  • Stock longer than the machine needs support behind the spindle, which the accessory list does not name
  • 6,930 mm (272.8 in) long, 15,000 kg (33,000 lb)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What diameter of pipe passes through the SL-80B?

Bar capacity is Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in) and the spindle bore is Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in). Larger diameters can be held in the 15 in chuck and turned over the bed, up to Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) over the cross slide.

02 What spindle speed and power does the SL-80B have?

2,000 rpm maximum with a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor and a 4 step transmission. The spindle bearing diameter is Ø180 mm (Ø7.1 in).

03 How does the SL-80B differ from the SL-80A?

The SL-80A has a 12 in chuck, a Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore, Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in) bar capacity, a 2 step Auto transmission and 3,000 rpm. The SL-80B has the 15 in chuck, the Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in) bore, 4 steps and 2,000 rpm. Length, travels and the 15,000 kg (33,000 lb) weight are shared.

04 What coolant options does the SL-80B have?

An external coolant supply system at 4 bar is standard. A high pressure coolant supply through the turret at 20 bar or above, with a cartridge type filtration system, is an optional accessory.
