Overview

The Johnford ST-60A is the middle bed of the three A-spindle ST lathes, with 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Z travel and 900 mm (35.4 in) of tailstock travel.

The step from the ST-40A costs weight and about a metre of floor: 12,000 kg (26,400 lb) and 6,195 mm (243.9 in) of length, against 11,000 kg (24,200 lb) and 5,132 mm (202 in). The step on to the ST-70A is smaller in length, 6,482 mm (255.2 in), though that machine has 1,600 mm (63 in) of travel. For a shop whose longest regular part is around a metre, this middle size avoids both the overhang of a short bed and the wasted stroke of a long one.

Everything at the spindle is as on the other A models. A 304 mm (12 in) chuck is standard and a 381 mm (15 in) chuck optional. The bore is 115 mm (4.5 in) and bar capacity 91 mm (3.6 in), or 102 mm (4 in) as an option. The 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) drive runs through an Auto Hi-Lo transmission to 3,000 rpm with the standard chuck.

X travel is 320 mm (12.6 in). The 12-position turret carries turning tools as supplied; a live tool turret in VDI or BMT is optional.
