Overview

The Johnford ST-40A is the fastest and shortest lathe of the ST series: a 60° slant-bed machine with 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z travel and a spindle that reaches 3,000 rpm.

Speed depends on what is mounted. The table gives 3,000 rpm for the 12 in chuck with the standard 91 mm (3.6 in) bar capacity, 2,800 rpm for the 12 in chuck with the optional 102 mm (4 in) capacity, and 2,500 rpm for the optional 15 in chuck. Anyone ordering the larger bore or the larger chuck should plan surface speeds on small diameters around the lower figure.

The A spindle is the only one in the series with an Auto Hi-Lo transmission instead of four speeds. Its motor is 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), the nose A2-8 with A2-11 as an option, the bore 115 mm (4.5 in) on a 160 mm (6.3 in) bearing. The ST-40B on the same bed trades speed for bore: 2,000 rpm and 116 mm (4.6 in) of bar capacity.

Swing is 790 mm (31.1 in) over the bed and 600 mm (23.6 in) over the cross slide, with 320 mm (12.6 in) of X travel. The tailstock is programmable, with a 125 mm (4.9 in) quill and MT#5 taper. The machine weighs 11,000 kg (24,200 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3,000 rpm with the standard 12 in chuck, the highest speed in the ST series
  • 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) through an Auto Hi-Lo transmission
  • Rapid traverse of 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z
  • 600 mm (23.6 in) swing over the cross slide on an 11,000 kg (24,200 lb) machine
  • Bar capacity can be raised from 91 mm (3.6 in) to 102 mm (4 in)

Limitations

  • Z travel of 800 mm (31.5 in) and tailstock travel of 500 mm (19.7 in)
  • The 15 in chuck option brings the speed down to 2,500 rpm
  • C axis, live tool turret and Y axis are optional
  • No motor option above 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) is listed for the A spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How fast does the ST-40A spindle run?

3,000 rpm with the 12 in chuck and 91 mm (3.6 in) bar capacity, 2,800 rpm with the 12 in chuck and 102 mm (4 in) bar capacity, and 2,500 rpm with the 15 in chuck. The transmission is an Auto Hi-Lo type.

02 What is the difference between the ST-40A and the ST-40B?

The spindle. The ST-40B has an A2-11 nose, a 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 116 mm (4.6 in) bar capacity, four automatic speeds and 2,000 rpm, with a 381 mm (15 in) chuck as standard. The bed, travels and tailstock are the same.

03 Does the ST-40A have a Y axis?

Only as an option. The table lists an optional Y-axis travel of ±75 mm (±3 in) with a 3 kW servo motor, and the accessory list has a 12-position live tool turret in VDI or BMT and a 0.001° C axis as further options.

04 How much space does the ST-40A need?

The machine measures 5,132 x 2,270 x 2,765 mm (202 x 89.4 x 108.9 in) and weighs 11,000 kg (24,200 lb). A chain type chip conveyor with trolley is included.
