Overview

The Hwacheon Hi-TECH 650 is a 12-station turning center offered with two headstocks and three bed lengths, and it is the first size in the Hi-TECH range with a Y-axis version. It turns up to Ø600 mm (Ø23.6 in) over a Ø940 mm (Ø37.0 in) swing, with Ø620 mm (Ø24.4 in) clearing the saddle.

The 650A and 650B are effectively two machines on one bed. The 650A carries a 15 in chuck (18 in optional) on an A2-11 nose, a Ø132 mm (Ø5.2 in) bore that passes Ø117 mm (Ø4.6 in) bar, and a 37 / 30 kW (49.6 / 40.2 hp) motor rated at 3,071 Nm (2,265 lb-ft). It runs to 2,000 rpm, or 1,800 rpm with the 18 in chuck. The 650B steps up to a 21 in chuck, an A2-15 nose, a Ø185 mm (Ø7.3 in) bore for Ø165 mm (Ø6.5 in) bar and 45 / 37 kW (60.3 / 49.6 hp) with 4,108 Nm (3,030 lb-ft), at the cost of a 1,500 rpm ceiling. Each has a stronger motor option: 50 / 40 kW on the A and 60 / 50 kW on the B.

Turning length depends on bed and version: 1,000 to 1,108 mm (39.4 to 43.6 in) on the standard bed, 2,000 to 2,108 mm (78.7 to 83.0 in) on the L and 3,100 to 3,208 mm (122.0 to 126.3 in) on the XL. X travel is 360 mm (14.2 in) at 20 m/min (787 ipm). Z rapid is 24 m/min (945 ipm) on the standard bed, 20 m/min (787 ipm) on the L and 10 m/min (394 ipm) on the XL.

The MC and YMC versions add driven tools in BMT 75 holders, 3,000 rpm from a 7.5 / 5.5 kW (10.1 / 7.4 hp) motor with an 11 / 7.5 kW option, and a C axis indexing in 0.0001° steps. The YMC adds ±80 mm (±3.1 in) of Y travel at 10 m/min (394 ipm), enough for off-centre holes and milled flats without a second setup. Supply is 75 kVA, and the coolant tank holds 250 L (66 US gal) on the standard bed, 300 L (79 US gal) on the L and 370 L (98 US gal) on the XL.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Choice of headstock: 650A with a 2,000 rpm A2-11 spindle, or 650B with a Ø185 mm (Ø7.3 in) bore and 4,108 Nm (3,030 lb-ft)
  • YMC version adds ±80 mm (±3.1 in) of Y travel to the driven tools and C axis
  • Optional motor upgrades to 50 / 40 kW (650A) or 60 / 50 kW (650B)
  • Three beds give up to 3,100 to 3,208 mm (122.0 to 126.3 in) of turning length on the XL
  • BMT 75 driven tool holders with an optional 11 / 7.5 kW live tool motor

Limitations

  • The 650B gives up speed for its bore: 1,500 rpm against 2,000 rpm on the 650A
  • On the 650A the 18 in chuck option lowers the speed limit to 1,800 rpm
  • Z rapid falls to 10 m/min (394 ipm) on the XL bed
  • Driven tools reach 3,000 rpm, which limits small drills and end mills

The headstock. The 650A has a 15 in chuck (18 in optional), A2-11 nose, Ø132 mm (Ø5.2 in) bore, Ø117 mm (Ø4.6 in) bar, 37 / 30 kW (49.6 / 40.2 hp), 3,071 Nm (2,265 lb-ft) and 2,000 rpm. The 650B has a 21 in chuck, A2-15 nose, Ø185 mm (Ø7.3 in) bore, Ø165 mm (Ø6.5 in) bar, 45 / 37 kW (60.3 / 49.6 hp), 4,108 Nm (3,030 lb-ft) and 1,500 rpm.

02 Is there a Y-axis version?

Yes. The YMC version has ±80 mm (±3.1 in) of Y travel with a 10 m/min (394 ipm) Y rapid, on top of the driven tools and the C axis of the MC. Driven tools run to 3,000 rpm in BMT 75 holders and take end mills up to Ø32 mm in ER 40 collets.

03 How does the Hi-TECH 650 compare with the Hi-TECH 550?

The Hi-TECH 650 turns Ø600 mm (Ø23.6 in) against Ø590 mm (Ø23.2 in) on the Hi-TECH 550, and its 650A motor is 37 / 30 kW (49.6 / 40.2 hp) against 30 / 22 kW (40.2 / 29.5 hp). The Hi-TECH 550 has a 10-station turret with 12 as an option; the 650 has 12.

04 What bed lengths are available?

Three. Z travel is 1,200 mm (47.2 in), 2,200 mm (86.6 in) or 3,300 mm (129.9 in), and tailstock travel 1,150 mm (45.3 in), 2,150 mm (84.6 in) or 3,250 mm (128.0 in). The machine is 6,130 mm (241.3 in) long on the standard bed, 7,130 mm (280.7 in) on the L and 8,430 mm (331.9 in) on the XL.

05 What tooling does the turret take?

The 12-station turret takes □32 mm shanks and Ø60 mm boring bars. On the MC and YMC versions, driven positions use BMT 75 holders, end mills up to Ø32 mm and ER 40 collets.
