Overview

In the Johnford ST-80CH the A2-15 spindle meets a frame large enough to use it fully: 800 mm (31.5 in) of swing over the cross slide, 1,000 mm (39.4 in) over the bed and 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z travel.

The optional 610 mm (24 in) chuck sits well inside that swing, leaving space for long jaws and for parts gripped on a diameter larger than the chuck. The standard chuck is 510 mm (20.1 in).

It is also the shortest model on which the large swing comes with a heavy tailstock. The ST-70CX, the size below, has 800 mm (31.5 in) over the cross slide too, but an MT#5 quill of Ø125 mm (4.9 in). The ST-80CH has a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) quill with MT#7 and 150 mm (5.9 in) of travel. For a solid workpiece of large diameter held between centers, that is the deciding difference.

Power is 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp), optionally 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp), through four automatic speeds: 1,500 rpm with the belt-type gearbox or 1,200 rpm with the geared headstock. X travel is 420 mm (16.5 in). The machine weighs 15,400 kg (33,880 lb).
