Overview

The Johnford ST-240DX is the largest lathe of the ST series in every respect: 6,050 mm (238.2 in) of Z travel, 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of swing over the bed, the D spindle, and 32,700 kg (71,940 lb) of machine weight, the highest figure in the three ST tables.

Beyond this model the series does not get bigger; it changes type. Larger swings and longer beds are the territory of the LC flat-bed lathes, where the LC-40 starts at 1,010 mm (39.8 in) of swing over the bed and offers distances between centers up to 20,000 mm. More functions, on the other hand, come through the ST options: a C axis, a live tool turret, a Y axis, a sub-spindle, or a B-axis milling/turning spindle.

As listed, the ST-240DX is a two-axis slant-bed lathe with a 12-position turret. Swing over the cross slide is 1,000 mm (39.4 in) and X travel 520 mm (20.5 in). The spindle has a 185 mm (7.3 in) bore, 165 mm (6.5 in) of bar capacity and a 240 mm (9.4 in) bearing, with 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) and 1,000 rpm.

The tailstock travels 5,400 mm (212.6 in). Outside dimensions are 11,667 x 2,950 x 3,258 mm (459.3 x 116.1 x 128.3 in).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is the ST-240DX the biggest ST lathe?

Yes. It has the longest Z travel of the series, 6,050 mm (238.2 in), the largest frame with 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of swing over the bed, the D spindle, and the highest listed weight, 32,700 kg (71,940 lb).

02 What comes after the ST-240DX for larger work?

Johnford's LC flat-bed heavy lathes. The LC-40, the smallest, has 1,010 mm (39.8 in) of swing over the bed and 640 mm (25.2 in) over the cross slide, with a bed 1,145 mm (45 in) wide.

03 What are the spindle figures of the ST-240DX?

A2-15 nose, 185 mm (7.3 in) bore, or 176 mm (6.9 in) with the geared headstock, 165 mm (6.5 in) of bar capacity, 240 mm (9.4 in) bearing diameter, four automatic speeds and 1,000 rpm.

04 How much floor does the ST-240DX need?

11,667 x 2,950 mm (459.3 x 116.1 in) for the machine, with a height of 3,258 mm (128.3 in). Space for the chip conveyor trolley and for crane loading comes on top.
