Overview

The Johnford ST-60BX has 420 mm (16.5 in) of X travel on a 1,200 mm (47.2 in) bed, with an A2-11 spindle and 1,020 mm (40.2 in) of swing over the bed.

Long cross travel is useful beyond large diameters. It gives the turret room to bring a long boring bar onto the center line and still retract clear of a wide part, and it lets external tools reach a large rim and then drop to a small journal without repositioning the work. On a lathe that swings 800 mm (31.5 in) over the cross slide, both situations come up often.

For boring in particular, Johnford's options include a boring bar holder on the turret carriage and a completely independent boring bar system.

The spindle is the middle one of the series: 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 116 mm (4.6 in) bar capacity, 2,000 rpm through four automatic speeds, and 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) or 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp). Tailstock travel is 900 mm (35.4 in). Rapids are 12 m/min on X and 16 m/min on Z. The machine weighs 12,300 kg (27,060 lb) and measures 6,195 x 2,270 x 2,765 mm (243.9 x 89.4 x 108.9 in).
