Overview

The Johnford ST-70CX is the biggest lathe Johnford builds on its short bed: 1,600 mm (63 in) of Z travel, 1,020 mm (40.2 in) of swing over the bed, the A2-15 spindle and a weight of 13,450 kg (29,590 lb).

It is a machine of two halves. At the headstock everything is heavy: a 510 mm (20.1 in) or 610 mm (24 in) chuck, a 200 mm (7.9 in) bearing, 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) and four automatic speeds. At the other end the tailstock is the light one of the short frames, with a Ø125 mm (4.9 in) quill, an MT#5 taper and 125 mm (4.9 in) of quill travel.

That matters for a workpiece of 800 mm (31.5 in) diameter and 1,600 mm (63 in) length, which can weigh a great deal. A part of that kind belongs on the ST-80CH, where the same swing comes with a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) MT#7 quill, 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z travel and 15,400 kg (33,880 lb) of machine. The ST-70CX is the right choice when the large swing is needed for shape, for hollow or fabricated parts, and not for sheer mass.

X travel is 420 mm (16.5 in); rapids are 12 m/min on X and 16 m/min on Z. Tailstock travel is 1,300 mm (51.2 in).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is the ST-70CX suitable for very heavy parts?

Its headstock is, but its tailstock quill is Ø125 mm (4.9 in) with an MT#5 taper. For heavy parts between centers, the ST-80CH offers a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) MT#7 quill with the same 800 mm (31.5 in) of swing over the cross slide.

02 What spindle does the ST-70CX have?

The C spindle: A2-15 nose, 152 mm (6 in) bore, 139 mm (5.5 in) bar capacity, 200 mm (7.9 in) bearing diameter and four automatic speeds, with 1,500 rpm from the standard belt-type gearbox.

03 What does the ST-70CX weigh?

13,450 kg (29,590 lb), the highest figure among the short-bed ST lathes. Outside dimensions are 6,482 x 2,290 x 2,765 mm (255.2 x 90.2 x 108.9 in).

04 What are the travels and rapids of the ST-70CX?

420 mm (16.5 in) on X and 1,600 mm (63 in) on Z, at 12 m/min and 16 m/min. The optional Y axis travels ±75 mm (±3 in) at 10 m/min.
