Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Johnford HT-40-2S that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Johnford HT-40-2S opens the large HT frame: Ø750 mm (29.5 in) swing over the bed, Ø600 mm (23.6 in) over the cross slide and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) between centers, with a sub-spindle in place of the tailstock.
Unlike the two small HT sizes, the main spindle is not one fixed unit. Johnford lists five variants, A to E. A is a Ø315 mm (12 in) chuck on an A2-8 nose with Ø91 mm (3.6 in) bar capacity; B a Ø381 mm (15 in) chuck on A2-11 with Ø116 mm (4.6 in); C and D a Ø510 mm (20 in) chuck with Ø139 mm (5.5 in) and Ø165 mm (6.5 in) bar; E a Ø610 mm (24 in) chuck passing Ø204 mm (8 in). Speed falls as the bore grows, from 3,000 rpm on A with the 12 in chuck to 750 rpm on E.
Power follows the same split. A and B have 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) through an Auto Hi-Lo transmission, while C, D and E have 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) through four automatic steps.
The sub-spindle is smaller than any of the big main spindles: A2-8 as standard with Ø91 mm (3.6 in) bar capacity, A2-11 as an option. On a 1,000 mm (39.4 in) bed that makes this the size for short, heavy, flanged parts that need a second-side operation rather than for long shafts. X travel is 320 mm (12.6 in).
