Overview

The Johnford ST-60B combines the A2-11 spindle with 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Z travel, and of the nine small-frame ST lathes it is the one closest to a general-purpose machine.

As delivered it is a two-axis lathe: a 12-position turning tool turret, a 381 mm (15 in) hydraulic chuck and a programmable tailstock. The options decide how far it goes beyond that. A 0.001° C axis and a 12-position live tool turret in VDI or BMT add milling and drilling. The Y axis adds ±75 mm (±3 in) of off-center travel on a 3 kW servo motor. A sub-spindle can take the place of the tailstock. None of these is included, so two machines with this model name can be very different.

Axis performance is that of the small frame. Rapid traverse is 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z, and 10 m/min on Y when fitted, with 4 kW servo motors on X and Z. The long ST lathes from the ST-80B upward move at 10 m/min and 12 m/min.

Spindle figures: 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 116 mm (4.6 in) bar capacity, 2,000 rpm through four automatic speeds, 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) or optionally 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp). The machine weighs 12,100 kg (26,620 lb).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is the ST-60B a turning center with live tools?

Not in its standard form. It comes with a 12-position turning tool turret. A 12-position live tool turret in VDI or BMT, a 0.001° C axis for the main spindle and Y-axis capability are optional accessories.

02 How fast are the ST-60B axes?

Rapid traverse is 15 m/min on X, 18 m/min on Z and 10 m/min on the optional Y. The X and Z servo motors are 4 kW each and the optional Y-axis motor is 3 kW.

03 What bar size passes through the ST-60B?

116 mm (4.6 in), through a 132.5 mm (5.2 in) spindle bore with an A2-11 nose. The standard chuck is a 381 mm (15 in) 3-jaw hydraulic through-hole type.

04 What separates the ST-60B from the ST-60C?

The ST-60C has the next spindle up: A2-15 nose, 152 mm (6 in) bore, 139 mm (5.5 in) bar capacity, a 510 mm (20.1 in) chuck and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) as standard. The ST-60C weighs 13,150 kg (28,930 lb) against 12,100 kg (26,620 lb) for the ST-60B.
