Overview

The Johnford ST-60AX trades a little axis speed for the biggest swing in its length class. It has 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Z travel, 1,020 mm (40.2 in) of swing over the bed and 800 mm (31.5 in) over the cross slide.

The trade is visible in one row. The ST-60AH, a frame smaller, traverses at 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z; the ST-60AX at 12 m/min and 16 m/min. Both use 7 kW servo motors. On a part with a large flange the cross slide of the X frame has further to go between the hub and the rim, 420 mm (16.5 in) of travel in all, so the lower X rapid is felt mostly on that kind of work.

The spindle is the 3,000 rpm A unit with an Auto Hi-Lo transmission and 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp). Its bore is 115 mm (4.5 in), and bar capacity is 91 mm (3.6 in) as standard or 102 mm (4 in) as an option.

A programmable tailstock with 900 mm (35.4 in) of travel and an MT#5 quill supports shaft work. Weight is 12,200 kg (26,840 lb), the same figure the table gives for the ST-60BH. Outside dimensions are 6,195 x 2,270 x 2,765 mm (243.9 x 89.4 x 108.9 in).
