Overview

The GEN TURN 78-MSY is the big-bar turning center of the range: 3.070 in (78 mm) through the main spindle drawtube, a 10 in chuck included, and a 16-station live turret with a Y axis. Expand Machinery calls it a 6-axis mill/turn lathe. It is built for work the smaller turret machines cannot hold, with a maximum turning diameter of 12.2 in (310 mm) and a turning length of 24.8 in (630 mm).

The main spindle is an integral, refrigerated unit running 60 - 4,000 rpm, rated 30 HP on the 30 min duty rating and 20 HP constant. The sub-spindle is smaller on purpose: a 2.559 in (65 mm) drawtube, an 8 in chuck and 15 HP on the 30 min rating, with a 10 in chuck optional. B-axis travel is 29.31 in (744 mm) at a rapid of 1,573 ipm (40 m/min).

Milling capability is a step above the smaller turret machines. The BMT-65 turret drives tools at 6,000 rpm with 7.5 HP (5.5 kW) and 14.75 ft-lb (20 Nm) of torque, where the GEN TURN C52 MYS has 1.34 HP (1.0 kW). Any of the 16 stations can hold an ID, OD or live tool, and the maker notes that each station can mount multiple tools. Adjacent tools change in 0.2 sec. The Y axis offers ±1.968 in (±50 mm), and the C axis resolves 360,000 radial positions for contouring.

Square tools are 1 in (25 mm), round tools 32 mm, collets ER-32. X travel is 9.05 in (230 mm). The machine weighs 17,650 lb (8,000 kg), measures 145 x 82 x 82 in before a 44 in chip conveyor and needs 56 kVA, 130 amps at 220 VAC. With one turret, only one spindle is being cut at a time. The GEN TURN 78-TTMY adds a second turret for simultaneous work.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3.070 in (78 mm) bar capacity with a 10 in chuck included on the main spindle
  • 30 HP (30 min duty rating) integral refrigerated main spindle, 60 - 4,000 rpm
  • Live tools with 7.5 HP (5.5 kW) and 14.75 ft-lb (20 Nm) at up to 6,000 rpm on BMT-65 tooling
  • Y axis of ±1.968 in (±50 mm) and full C-axis contouring on both spindles
  • 0.2 sec adjacent-tool indexing by servo

Limitations

  • One turret serves both spindles, so the two spindles cannot be cut simultaneously
  • Sub-spindle bar capacity is 2.559 in (65 mm), below the 3.070 in (78 mm) of the main spindle
  • Top speed of 4,000 rpm limits surface speed on small diameters
  • Heavy services: 56 kVA and 130 amps at 220 VAC, and 17,650 lb (8,000 kg) on the floor
