Overview

The Johnford ST-100CX has 2,400 mm (94.5 in) of Z travel under a swing of 1,200 mm (47.2 in) over the bed, with the A2-15 spindle and 17,000 kg (37,400 lb) of machine weight.

Cross travel is the figure to study here. At 520 mm (20.5 in) it is more than the radius of the 1,000 mm (39.4 in) swing over the cross slide, so a tool can travel from the largest diameter the carriage clears all the way to the center line. Facing a full-size part in one pass, or boring it and then turning its rim with tools on the same turret, needs exactly that.

A 12-position turret holds the tools. On parts of this size the tool overhangs are long, and the options include a boring bar holder on the turret carriage and an independent boring bar system.

The spindle delivers 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) through four automatic speeds, to 1,500 rpm as standard, 1,400 rpm in the optional version, or 1,200 rpm with the geared headstock. Bore is 152 mm (6 in), bar capacity 139 mm (5.5 in). The tailstock travels 2,100 mm (82.7 in). Outside dimensions are 7,812 x 2,645 x 3,175 mm (307.6 x 104.1 x 125 in).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Why does X travel matter on the ST-100CX?

At 520 mm (20.5 in) it covers the full radius of the 1,000 mm (39.4 in) swing over the cross slide, so one tool can face from the outside to the center. The ST-100CH has 420 mm (16.5 in) of X travel.

02 What speeds does the ST-100CX have?

1,500 rpm as standard and 1,400 rpm as an option with the belt type gear box, and 1,200 rpm with the geared headstock. There are four automatic speeds.

03 How heavy is the ST-100CX?

17,000 kg (37,400 lb). The same length with the smaller spindle, the ST-100BX, weighs 16,700 kg (36,740 lb), and with the larger one, the ST-100DX, 17,200 kg (37,840 lb).

04 What tailstock does the ST-100CX have?

A programmable hydraulic tailstock with a rotary quill of Ø200 mm (7.9 in), 150 mm (5.9 in) of quill travel, MT#7 taper and 2,100 mm (82.7 in) of tailstock travel.
