Overview

A 10 in main spindle paired with an 8 in sub-spindle on 760 mm (30 in) of Z travel: the Johnford HT-35-2S is the unequal twin-spindle lathe of the small HT frame.

The main side does the heavy half of the job. It has a Ø254 mm (10 in) chuck on an A2-8 nose, a Ø86 mm (3.4 in) bore that passes Ø76.5 mm (3 in) bar, a Ø130 mm (5.1 in) bearing diameter and 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) at up to 3,500 rpm. The sub-spindle is the lighter, faster unit: Ø203.2 mm (8 in) chuck, A2-6 nose, 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) and 4,500 rpm. Its Ø51 mm (2 in) bar capacity is the limit for anything that has to pass through the second spindle.

Compared with the HT-30-2S, which has 550 mm (21.7 in) between centers, this machine has 800 mm (31.5 in), and the weight rises from 7,500 kg (16,500 lb) to 11,000 kg (24,200 lb). X travel is 175 mm (6.9 in) and swing over the cross slide Ø330 mm (13 in).

Single 12-station turret, 45° bed, heavy box ways on all axes. The turret is non-driven unless the live tool turret is ordered, and a bar feeder interface and parts catcher are options for running from bar.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø254 mm (10 in) main chuck with Ø76.5 mm (3 in) bar capacity
  • 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) main spindle on a Ø130 mm (5.1 in) bearing
  • Sub-spindle reaches 4,500 rpm for finishing the second side
  • 800 mm (31.5 in) between centers, 760 mm (30 in) of Z travel
  • Heavy box ways on all axes are standard

Limitations

  • Sub-spindle passes only Ø51 mm (2 in) bar against Ø76.5 mm (3 in) on the main side
  • Main spindle tops out at 3,500 rpm
  • At 11,000 kg (24,200 lb) it is much heavier than the 7,500 kg (16,500 lb) HT-30-2S
  • Live tool turret, C-axis and Y axis cost extra

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Why are the two spindles of the HT-35-2S different sizes?

The main spindle is built for the first, heavier operation: a Ø254 mm (10 in) chuck and 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp). The sub-spindle takes the part for the second side with a Ø203.2 mm (8 in) chuck, 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) and a higher top speed of 4,500 rpm.

02 What bar size can the HT-35-2S run?

Ø76.5 mm (3 in) through the main spindle, which has a Ø86 mm (3.4 in) bore. The sub-spindle bore is Ø65 mm (2.6 in) with a bar capacity of Ø51 mm (2 in). A bar feeder interface or bar feeder system is an option.

03 How fast are the axes of the HT-35-2S?

Rapid traverse is 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z and W. The X, Z1/Z2 and W axes each have a 4 kW servo motor, and all axes run on heavy box ways.

04 What control does the HT-35-2S use?

A Fanuc 0i-TF PLUS controller with Manual Guide i is standard. A Siemens SINUMERIK 828D, a Fanuc 31i-MB PLUS or a Siemens SINUMERIK ONE controller are listed as options.
