Overview

Six metres is the limit of the ST series, and the Johnford ST-240B is the lightest way to get there: 6,050 mm (238.2 in) of Z travel at 32,100 kg (70,620 lb).

The other six-metre models on this frame, the ST-240C and ST-240D, weigh 32,200 kg (70,840 lb) and 32,500 kg (71,500 lb). The differences are small because the bed, carriage and tailstock are shared and only the headstock changes. What separates the three is the spindle, and the B version has the smallest and fastest: A2-11, 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 116 mm (4.6 in) bar capacity and 2,000 rpm.

Tailstock travel is 5,400 mm (212.6 in), so the tailstock cannot follow the carriage over the whole Z stroke; very short parts are held at the headstock end. The quill is Ø200 mm (7.9 in) with an MT#7 taper.

The machine is 11,667 mm (459.3 in) long, which is not much more than the five-metre ST-200B at 11,267 mm (443.6 in). Width and height are 2,504 mm (98.6 in) and 2,895 mm (114 in). Standard power is 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), with 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) optional.
