Overview

Long and slim describes the work of the Johnford SL-65: 1,500 mm (59.1 in) of Z travel with the base 10 in chuck and Ø76.5 mm (Ø3 in) bar spindle. It is the longest bed of the medium-sized SL series.

The pairing makes sense for a particular part family. Ball screws, lead screws, piston rods, propeller and drive shafts, conveyor rollers and textile machine rolls are a metre or more long and rarely thicker than a 10 in chuck can hold. For them the 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) motor and 3,500 rpm of the base spindle are adequate, and the higher speed is an advantage on small journals. Paying for the 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) spindle of the SL-65A only makes sense if the shafts are forged or need large stock removed.

A part this long stands or falls with its support. The programmable hydraulic tailstock is standard on the 65 size, travels 1,300 mm (51.1 in) and has an Ø85 mm (Ø3.3 in) quill with 100 mm (3.9 in) of stroke. Beyond that, Johnford offers manual steady rests of its own make and hydraulic steady rests as options. One of them should be on the order for anything slender near full length.

The 45° bed and box ways carry over from the shorter models, and so does the 250 mm (9.8 in) X travel. Overall length is 5,275 mm (207.7 in), section 2,250 x 2,160 mm (88.6 x 85 in), weight 10,500 kg (23,100 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,500 mm (59.1 in) of Z travel, the longest of the medium SL series
  • Programmable hydraulic tailstock with 1,300 mm (51.1 in) of travel as standard
  • 3,500 rpm for small journals on long shafts
  • Geared 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) spindle, Ø76.5 mm (Ø3 in) bar capacity
  • Manual and hydraulic steady rests offered as options

Limitations

  • Steady rests are not part of the standard machine
  • Z travel is 1,400 mm (55.1 in) when the Y-axis is fitted
  • Swing over cross slide of Ø450 mm (Ø17.7 in) limits diameter along the bed
  • 5,275 mm (207.7 in) long and 10,500 kg (23,100 lb)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long is the SL-65 bed?

Z travel is 1,500 mm (59.1 in), or 1,400 mm (55.1 in) with the Y-axis. Tailstock travel is 1,300 mm (51.1 in), or 1,200 mm (47.2 in) with the Y-axis. The machine is 5,275 mm (207.7 in) long.

02 What tailstock does the SL-65 have?

A programmable hydraulic tailstock is a standard accessory for this size. The quill is Ø85 mm (Ø3.3 in) with 100 mm (3.9 in) of travel, an MT#5 fixed centre, and an MT#4 rotary quill as an option.

03 When is the SL-65A the better choice over the SL-65?

When the shafts are thick or rough. The SL-65A has a 12 in chuck, Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in) bar capacity and a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor at 3,000 rpm, against the 10 in chuck and 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) at 3,500 rpm of the SL-65.

04 What is the next longer SL lathe after the SL-65?

The large-sized series starts with the SL-70A, which has 1,550 mm (61 in) of Z travel on a bed with Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) of swing, and goes up to the SL-120A with 3,000 mm (118.1 in).
