Overview

For the Johnford ST-100C the maker lists 2,400 mm of Z travel, 2,100 mm (82.7 in) of tailstock travel and a 510 mm (20.1 in) chuck on the A2-15 spindle.

Its speed row needs reading with care. The belt-type gearbox is given as 1,500 rpm standard and 1,400 rpm optional. The table does not say what the optional version is, but the chuck row offers a clue: the 610 mm (24 in) chuck is the listed chuck option, and a larger, heavier chuck normally carries a lower speed limit. A geared headstock, at 1,200 rpm, is the third possibility.

With 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) and four automatic speeds, the machine is equipped for heavy turning on diameters up to the 700 mm (27.6 in) swing over the cross slide. A 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) motor is available. Bar capacity is 139 mm (5.5 in) through a 152 mm (6 in) bore.

At 16,800 kg (36,960 lb) the ST-100C is slightly heavier than the ST-100B, which weighs 16,500 kg (36,300 lb), and well below the ST-130C at 20,300 kg (44,660 lb). Outside dimensions are 7,812 x 2,504 x 2,895 mm (307.6 x 98.6 x 114 in).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does 1,500 rpm (Std.) and 1,400 rpm (Opt.) mean on the ST-100C?

The table lists both figures for the belt type gear box without further explanation. The standard configuration reaches 1,500 rpm and the optional one 1,400 rpm; a geared headstock is listed separately at 1,200 rpm.

02 What is the Z travel of the ST-100C?

2,400 mm, the same as the ST-100B and ST-100D. The tailstock travels 2,100 mm (82.7 in) and X travel is 370 mm (14.6 in).

03 How heavy is the ST-100C?

16,800 kg (36,960 lb). For comparison, the ST-80C weighs 15,300 kg (33,660 lb) and the ST-130C 20,300 kg (44,660 lb).

04 What chuck sizes are listed for the ST-100C?

510 mm (20.1 in) as standard and 610 mm (24 in) as the option. The standard chuck is a 3-jaw hydraulic through-hole type supplied with one set of hard and soft jaws.
