Overview

The Johnford ST-80C is the first ST lathe on which the optional 610 mm (24 in) chuck fits under the carriage: swing over the cross slide is 700 mm (27.6 in), against 600 mm (23.6 in) on the short ST-70C.

That makes this frame the natural home of the A2-15 spindle. The standard chuck is 510 mm (20.1 in), the bore 152 mm (6 in), bar capacity 139 mm (5.5 in) and the bearing diameter 200 mm (7.9 in). Z travel is 2,000 mm (78.7 in).

Two headstock types are listed. The belt-type gearbox, which the accessory list calls standard, runs to 1,500 rpm, or 1,400 rpm in the optional version. The geared headstock runs to 1,200 rpm. Either has four automatic speeds. The motor is 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp), with 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) as the option, so the choice is between a little more speed and a gear-driven spindle for sustained heavy cuts.

A Ø200 mm (7.9 in) MT#7 tailstock quill and 7 kW axis motors match the spindle. Rapid traverse is 10 m/min on X and 12 m/min on Z. The machine weighs 15,300 kg (33,660 lb); the B-spindle version, the ST-80B, weighs 15,000 kg (33,000 lb).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the belt-type gearbox and the geared headstock on the ST-80C?

Speed, as far as the table goes. The belt type gear box is listed at 1,500 rpm as standard and 1,400 rpm as an option; the geared headstock at 1,200 rpm. The accessory list names the belt-type gearbox for heavy-duty cutting as standard equipment.

02 Does a 24 in chuck fit the ST-80C?

Yes. The optional chuck is 610 mm (24 in) and the swing over the cross slide is 700 mm (27.6 in), with 920 mm (36.2 in) over the bed. The standard chuck is 510 mm (20.1 in).

03 How does the ST-80C differ from the ST-80D?

The ST-80D has a larger bore, 185 mm (7.3 in), with 165 mm (6.5 in) of bar capacity and a 240 mm (9.4 in) bearing diameter, and runs at 1,000 rpm. The ST-80C has a 152 mm (6 in) bore and reaches 1,500 rpm.

04 What power does the ST-80C spindle have?

30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) as standard. A 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) motor is the listed option. The transmission has four automatic speeds.
