Overview

Pipe work decides for the Johnford ST-100D. It has 165 mm (6.5 in) of bar capacity through a 185 mm (7.3 in) bore and 2,400 mm (94.5 in) of Z travel.

A typical job is a length of pipe that needs a thread or a sealing face on its end. The pipe passes through the spindle and is gripped in the 510 mm (20.1 in) chuck; only the end is in the work zone. For that kind of part the Z travel is used for long bores, long tapers or for parts held between chuck and center, and the 2,100 mm (82.7 in) of tailstock travel serves the second case.

If the pipe is larger than the D spindle allows, Johnford lists bigger spindle bores as an option, with Ø234, Ø318, Ø410 and Ø510 mm named. A geared headstock is also listed; it takes the bore down to 176 mm (6.9 in).

Spindle speed is 1,000 rpm. On pipe diameters that is seldom a restriction, but it does limit surface speed on small turned diameters, so this is not the model for mixed work with small shafts. Weight is 17,000 kg (37,400 lb) and length 7,812 mm (307.6 in).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What pipe size does the ST-100D take through the spindle?

Bar capacity is 165 mm (6.5 in) and the bore 185 mm (7.3 in), or 176 mm (6.9 in) with the geared headstock. Bigger spindle bores like Ø234, Ø318, Ø410, Ø510 mm are optional.

02 How fast does the ST-100D spindle turn?

1,000 rpm, with four automatic speeds. The table gives the same figure for the belt type gear box and for the geared headstock. The motor is 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp).

03 What is the weight of the ST-100D?

17,000 kg (37,400 lb). The ST-100C weighs 16,800 kg (36,960 lb) and the ST-100B 16,500 kg (36,300 lb), all with 2,400 mm of Z travel.

04 Can the ST-100D hold a pipe at both ends of the headstock?

The standard table lists one chuck, 510 mm (20.1 in), or 610 mm (24 in) as an option. A rear chuck is not listed for this model, so support behind the spindle would need to be discussed with Johnford.
