Overview
The Mazak SLANT TURN 600 is the largest-bore model in the SLANT TURN series, featuring a massive 375 mm (14.76 in) spindle bore that accommodates through-spindle work on pipe and tubular stock up to nearly 15 inches in diameter. This is one of the largest spindle bores available in any production CNC lathe, positioning the ST-600 for specialized applications in oil and gas, pipeline, and heavy industrial manufacturing.
The SLANT TURN 600 runs a 21-inch (533 mm) minimum chuck with a maximum turning diameter of 910 mm (35.83 in). The main spindle delivers 45 kW (60 hp) at up to 800 RPM with enormous torque output designed for heavy roughing at very large diameters. The reduced maximum RPM compared to smaller SLANT TURN models reflects the massive spindle bore and the large workpiece diameters this machine targets.
Three bed length configurations are available: 2,009 mm (79.09 in), 3,144 mm (123.78 in), and 4,033 mm (158.78 in). The shortest option still provides over 6.5 feet of turning length, reflecting that the ST-600 is purpose-built for substantial workpieces. The slant-bed construction provides rigidity and chip evacuation suited to the heavy cutting loads.
A 12-station disc turret handles standard turning operations with programmable tailstock support. MAZATROL SmoothG provides the CNC with conversational programming for large-diameter threading, facing, and contouring.
The SLANT TURN 600 competes with the Okuma VTM series, Hwacheon Mega 100, and Hankook SKT21. New machines price between $350,000 and $550,000 depending on bed length and options.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 14.76-inch spindle bore is among the largest available in any production CNC lathe for massive through-spindle pipe work
- 45 kW spindle with enormous torque handles aggressive roughing at the very large diameters this machine targets
- 35.83-inch max turning diameter accommodates large-diameter castings, forgings, and pipe fittings
- Three bed lengths from 79 to 158 inches provide flexibility for different workpiece lengths
- 21-inch minimum chuck with heavy-duty clamping secures large, heavy workpieces during aggressive cuts
- Slant-bed construction maintains rigidity and chip evacuation under extreme cutting loads
Limitations
- 800 RPM max spindle speed severely limits surface speed, restricting the machine to large-diameter work only
- 18,000 kg machine weight requires heavy-duty foundation, overhead crane, and significant floor space
- No short-bed option; the smallest configuration still provides 79 inches of turning length
- Rapid traverse at 10-12 m/min is quite slow, adding significant non-cutting time on long parts

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New pricing ranges from $350,000 for the medium-bed to $550,000 for the extra-long bed with options. Used units from 2005-2020 trade between $120,000 and $300,000 depending on condition, hours, and bed length.
02
The 600 has a 14.76-inch bore vs the 550 at 10.83 inches. Both share the same 35.83-inch turning diameter and 21-inch minimum chuck. Step up to the 600 only when workpieces need to pass through a spindle bore larger than 10.83 inches.
03
Yes, large-diameter pipe threading is a primary application for the ST-600. MAZATROL SmoothG includes API threading cycles. The 14.76-inch bore accommodates standard pipe sizes up to 14 inches for through-spindle processing.
04
The 800 RPM limit reflects the massive 14.76-inch spindle bore and the heavy rotating assembly. At this bore size, the workpieces are large-diameter and high surface speeds are achieved at lower RPM. At 800 RPM on a 14-inch diameter, surface speed exceeds 2,900 SFM.
