Overview
A Ø15 in (381 mm) hole through the spindle is what defines the Mazak SLANT TURN 600. It is the largest bore of the SLANT TURN 500, 550 and 600 family, paired with a 21 in chuck and a 500 rpm spindle. Mazak's table for it covers the 2000U bed: 79 in (2,007 mm) of maximum turning length at up to Ø36 in (914 mm).
At 500 rpm the machine is plainly meant for big diameters. Large pipe and tube can run back through the headstock while the end is turned or threaded, and at those sizes a few hundred rpm is plenty. Small features on the same part will cut slowly. The SLANT TURN 550 is the step down, with a Ø11 in (279 mm) bore and 1,000 rpm.
Between centers, the table lists a tailstock with an MT No.6 taper and 82 in (2,083 mm) of travel. For the SLANT TURN 500, 550 and 600 series Mazak states that the tailstock quill extends 250 mm, which lets it support long and short shafts without the steady rest being removed. The steady rest itself is an option: a self-run automatic type positioned by the CNC, in sizes up to Ø16.14", compatible with the 2000U / 3000U / 4000U beds.
The spindle motor is rated 37 kW (50 HP) continuous and 45 kW (60 HP) on the 30 min. rating, with 5,163 ft-lb (7,000 Nm) of intermittent torque on the low speed winding in low range. Z travel is 85 in (2,159 mm) and X travel 18 in (457 mm). The longer bed shows in the installation figures: 274 in (6,960 mm) × 96 in (2,438 mm) of floor and 39,242 lb (17,800 kg), against 30,864 lb (14,000 kg) for the SLANT TURN 550 on its shorter bed.
