Overview

Two spindles and two turrets in a 5,100 mm (200.8 in) machine: the Johnford HT-30-2SD is the smallest HT lathe that can cut two sides of a part at the same moment.

Both spindles are the 8 in unit of the small HT frame, with a Ø203.2 mm (8 in) chuck, A2-6 nose, Ø51 mm (2 in) bar capacity, 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) and 4,500 rpm. Each turret has 12 stations and 175 mm (6.9 in) of X travel. With a dual-path control system as standard, the upper turret can work at the main spindle while the lower one finishes the previous part in the sub-spindle, so the second operation costs no extra cycle time.

The price of fitting all of that into the short bed is Z travel: 460 mm (18.1 in) on Z1/Z2, less than the 550 mm (21.7 in) of the single-turret HT-30-2S. Distance between centers is 550 mm (21.7 in). Parts for this machine are short: bar-fed pieces, small forgings, slugs cut from Ø51 mm (2 in) stock.

Rapids are 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z and W. The turrets are non-driven as supplied; a live tool turret in BMT or VDI, a C-axis and a Y axis on the upper turret are options, as are a bar feeder interface, a parts catcher and a conveyor belt for parts. Weight is 7,500 kg (16,500 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two 8 in spindles and two 12-station turrets working at once
  • Both spindles reach 4,500 rpm with 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp)
  • Dual-path control system is standard
  • Only 5,100 mm (200.8 in) long and 7,500 kg (16,500 lb)
  • Bar feeder interface, parts catcher and parts conveyor are listed options

Limitations

  • Z travel is 460 mm (18.1 in), the shortest of the HT range
  • Bar capacity is Ø51 mm (2 in) on both spindles
  • X travel of 175 mm (6.9 in) per turret
  • Live tooling, C-axis and Y axis are extras

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does 2SD stand for on the HT-30-2SD?

Twin spindles and twin turrets. The machine has a main spindle, a sub-spindle in place of the tailstock, and two sets of 12-position direct-mount non-driven turrets under a dual-path control system.

02 Why is the Z travel of the HT-30-2SD shorter than on the HT-30-2S?

Johnford's tables give 460 mm (18.1 in) for the HT-30-2SD and 550 mm (21.7 in) for the HT-30-2S, on the same 550 mm (21.7 in) between centers. The tables do not state the reason; the 2SD carries a second turret within the same machine length.

03 What are the spindle figures of the HT-30-2SD?

Main and sub-spindle are alike: Ø203.2 mm (8 in) chuck, A2-6 nose, Ø65 mm (2.6 in) bore, Ø51 mm (2 in) bar capacity, one-step drive, 4,500 rpm and 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp).

04 Can the HT-30-2SD run unattended from bar?

The equipment for it is optional: a bar feeder interface or bar feeder system, a parts catcher and a conveyor belt for parts are all on the optional accessory list. A chain type chip conveyor with trolley is standard.
