Overview

Johnford builds its 1,600 mm B-spindle lathe on three frames, and the Johnford ST-70B is the smallest of them. It swings 790 mm (31.1 in) over the bed and 600 mm (23.6 in) over the cross slide, with 320 mm (12.6 in) of X travel.

The other two are the ST-70BH, with 920 mm (36.2 in) and 700 mm (27.6 in) of swing and 370 mm (14.6 in) of X, and the ST-70BX, with 1,020 mm (40.2 in) and 800 mm (31.5 in) of swing and 420 mm (16.5 in) of X. All three share the spindle, the 1,600 mm (63 in) Z travel and the outside dimensions. What the ST-70B gives up is clearance; what it keeps is the lightest carriage, moved by 4 kW servo motors where the ST-70BH and ST-70BX use 7 kW.

So the choice comes down to part diameter. If the work is shafting that never approaches 600 mm, the larger swing buys nothing. If a wide flange has to clear the cross slide now and then, the H or X frame is the answer.

The spindle is the A2-11 unit: 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 116 mm (4.6 in) bar capacity and 2,000 rpm through four automatic speeds. The tailstock travels 1,300 mm (51.2 in). Weight is 13,200 kg (29,040 lb).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the ST-70B, ST-70BH and ST-70BX?

Swing and X travel. The ST-70B swings 600 mm (23.6 in) over the cross slide with 320 mm (12.6 in) of X. The ST-70BH swings 700 mm (27.6 in) with 370 mm (14.6 in) of X. The ST-70BX swings 800 mm (31.5 in) with 420 mm (16.5 in) of X.

02 How heavy is the ST-70B?

13,200 kg (29,040 lb). The ST-70BH is listed at 13,300 kg (29,260 lb) and the ST-70BX at 13,400 kg (29,480 lb), so the larger frames add little weight.

03 What spindle does the ST-70B use?

The B spindle: A2-11 nose, 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 180 mm (7.1 in) bearing diameter and 116 mm (4.6 in) bar capacity, with a 381 mm (15 in) chuck as standard and a 450 mm (17.7 in) chuck as an option.

04 What are the outside dimensions of the ST-70B?

6,482 x 2,290 x 2,765 mm (255.2 x 90.2 x 108.9 in). The bed is inclined at 60° and a chain type chip conveyor with trolley is standard.
