We do not have a price for the Johnford SL-40 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Johnford SL-40 opens the medium-sized SL series with a 10 in chuck, Ø76.5 mm (Ø3 in) bar capacity and a swing of Ø580 mm (Ø22.8 in) over the bed. At 4,000 rpm it is the fastest spindle of the medium group.
It is also the lightest, and the table shows why. The SL-40 keeps the construction of the small models: a saddle inclined at 30°, a one step transmission, an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor, a Ø60 mm (Ø2.4 in) tailstock quill with an MT#4 centre. Its outer dimensions, 1,851 x 1,862 mm (72.9 x 73.3 in) by 3,525 mm (138.8 in) long, are those of the SL-30. From the SL-50 upward Johnford changes to a 45° bed, a 2 step gearbox and a larger tailstock.
So the SL-40 is a large-swing, light-duty machine. It suits parts that are big in diameter but are not cut hard: aluminium housings, thin-walled rings, plastic and bronze parts, finishing work on pre-machined steel. A shop that wants to rough alloy steel at the full diameter of a 10 in chuck is better served by the SL-50 and its 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) geared drive.
Z travel is 600 mm (23.6 in), or 500 mm (19.7 in) when the Y-axis is fitted, and X travel is 240 mm (9.4 in). Rapids are 20 / 10 / 20 m/min (787 / 394 / 787 ipm), quicker than the heavier medium models. The machine weighs 4,500 kg (9,900 lb).
