Overview

The GTD-44-55 HK CNC is a very large flat-bed CNC lathe: 44 in (1,120 mm) of swing over the bed, 27.95 in (710 mm) over the cross slide and 78 to 236 in (2,000 - 6,000 mm) between centers. Expand Machinery titles the page as a 44 to 55 in swing machine, though the specification table gives the 44 in figure only. Everything about it is sized for heavy, slow, high-torque turning.

Spindle speed is 6 - 500 rpm in four automatically selected gear ranges, and with the larger A2-15 and A2-20 spindles it is 6 - 292 rpm. Power is 30 HP (22 kW) on beds up to 160 in, with 40 HP optional, and 40 HP (30 kW) on beds of 200 in and longer. The standard A2-11 spindle has a 6 in (152 mm) bore. Bores of 9, 10, 12 and 15 in are optional, a wide choice.

The carriage is proportioned to match. The bed is 32 in (810 mm) wide, cross slide travel is 23.62 in (600 mm), the Z ballscrew is 63 mm in diameter, and the tailstock quill is 7.87 in (200 mm) across with 11.81 in (300 mm) of stroke and 2-speed gearing. An 8-station turret takes any mix of ID and OD tools, 1.25 x 1.25 in (32 x 32 mm) for OD and 1.97 in (50 mm) bores for ID, with 4 ID holders included.

Two accessories in the feature list show the intended work: a rear spindle chuck mount to support long workpieces passing through the bore, and a boring-bar holder for the back of the cross slide. Rapids are 196 in/min (5,000 mm/min) and cutting feed 118 in/min (3,000 mm/min). The control is a Fanuc 0i-TF.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the swing of the GTD-44-55 HK CNC?

The specification table gives 44 in (1,120 mm) of swing over the bed and 27.95 in (710 mm) over the cross slide. The page title describes 44 to 55 in swing heavy duty big bore lathes, so ask Expand Machinery for the figures of the 55 in version. The bed is 32 in (810 mm) wide.

02 Which spindle bores can be ordered?

Standard is a 6 in (152 mm) bore on an A2-11 spindle nose. Optional bores are 9, 10, 12 and 15 in, with A2-15 and A2-20 spindle noses optional. With those larger spindles the speed range is 6 - 292 rpm instead of 6 - 500 rpm.

03 How much power does it have?

On bed lengths up to 160 in the spindle motor is 30 HP (22 kW), with 40 HP optional. Beds of 200 in and longer get a 40 HP (30 kW) motor. The drive passes through 4 automatically selected gear ranges with infinitely variable speed in each.

04 What tooling does the turret take?

An 8 station tool turret accepts any mix of ID and OD tools. OD tools are 1.25 x 1.25 in (32 x 32 mm). The ID tool holder bore is 1.97 in (50 mm), with 63 mm optional, and 4 ID toolholders are included. A boring-bar holder for the back of the cross slide is available.

05 What is the tailstock like?

The quill is 7.87 in (200 mm) in diameter with 11.81 in (300 mm) of stroke, 2-speed quill gearing and an MT-6 taper. The body is carried by the saddle with manual lockdown; a hydraulic tailstock with hydraulic quill and bed lockdown is optional.
