Overview

The GEN TURN C24-G is a compact chucking lathe built around automation instead of size: a 5C collet chuck, an 8-station turret and a gantry loader that Expand Machinery describes as built in, with either 2 or 3 axes. The maker calls it ideal for high production of fasteners, and the figures agree. X travel is 3.937 in (100 mm), Z travel 9.448 in (240 mm), and bar capacity through the A2-4 spindle is 1 in (25 mm).

Small blanks are the point. Maximum chucking diameter is 5 in (125 mm) under a 10 in (250 mm) swing, and the spindle runs to 6,000 rpm on a motor rated 7 HP on the 30-minute duty rating and 5 HP constant duty. The hydraulic octagonal turret indexes in 0.8 second, and the machine is also available with gang tooling in place of the turret. A hydraulic tailstock with 4 in (100 mm) of stroke is in the table, which helps with slender headed parts.

For feeding blanks, the specification lists an optional part loader with 12 rotary stacking stations and a lifter station. It takes workpieces from 3/8 in (10 mm) to 3.15 in (80 mm) in diameter, at least 2.0 mm thick, with a total pallet weight of 100 lb (45 kg). Bowl feeders are a further option for loose parts such as screw blanks.

The whole machine weighs 3,087 lb (1,400 kg) and occupies 55 x 40 x 64 in (1,390 x 1,000 x 1,625 mm), so it fits where a bar-fed twin-spindle machine would not. Control is Fanuc. The listed specification shows no live tooling, no sub-spindle and no Y axis: the machine turns, faces, drills on center and threads, then hands the part back to the gantry.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Gantry loader is built in, in a 2-axis or 3-axis version, so the machine arrives automated
  • 8-station hydraulic turret indexes in 0.8 second; a gang-tool version is also available
  • 6,000 rpm spindle with a built-in 5C collet chuck and 1 in (25 mm) bar capacity
  • Small footprint of 55 x 40 x 64 in (1,390 x 1,000 x 1,625 mm) at 3,087 lb (1,400 kg)
  • Hydraulic tailstock with 4 in (100 mm) of stroke

Limitations

  • X travel is only 3.937 in (100 mm) and maximum chucking diameter 5 in (125 mm)
  • Rapids of 468 ipm (12 m/min) are slow next to the 787 ipm (20 m/min) of the GEN TURN 32-GT
  • The stacking part loader in the table is marked optional, and bowl feeders are optional too
  • Spindle motor is 5 HP on the constant-duty rating
