Overview

The DN Solutions PUMA 5100 LYC is the long-bed, big-bore Y-axis variant in the PUMA 5100 series. The C designation indicates the largest spindle bore option in the 5100 platform, paired with a 21-inch chuck and Y-axis capability. It's purpose-built for shops machining large-diameter tubular stock, heavy pipe, and hollow workpieces that need to pass through the spindle while also requiring off-center milled features.

The spindle delivers 45 kW (60 hp) with 2,958 Nm (2,182 ft-lb) of torque at up to 1,200 RPM. The speed ceiling is lower than the LYA and LYB due to the larger-bore spindle configuration — the bigger bore means a larger, heavier rotating assembly that runs at reduced RPM for bearing life and safe centrifugal loads. But at the large diameters this machine handles, 1,200 RPM still provides productive surface speeds.

The 21-inch (533 mm) chuck clamps parts up to 650 mm (26 in) diameter with 2,002 mm (79 in) of turning length. The Y-axis provides +/-80 mm (160 mm total, 6.3 in) of off-center travel. The 12-station turret with 4,000 RPM live tooling and C-axis enables comprehensive mill-turn operations: bolt patterns, flats, keyways, and cross-holes on pipe flanges, valve bodies, and large tubular components.

Z-axis travel is 2,155 mm (85 in) with 362 mm (14 in) on X. Rapids run 16 m/min on X, 20 m/min on Z, and 8 m/min on Y. Box-way construction and 12,800 kg (28,219 lb) of mass provide the rigidity platform. The FANUC 0i-TF Plus control handles multi-axis coordination.

The LYC fills a specific heavy-industry niche: shops that process large-bore tubular components needing both through-spindle capability and Y-axis milling. Oil and gas pipe work, large valve assemblies, and pressure vessel components are its natural habitat. Specs sourced from DN Solutions published data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Big-bore spindle passes large-diameter tubular stock through the headstock for pipe and casing work
  • Y-axis with 160 mm travel enables off-center milling on large tubular and hollow workpieces
  • 21-inch chuck and 2,958 Nm torque provide maximum clamping and cutting force
  • 2,002 mm turning length handles long tubular components in a single setup
  • 45 kW spindle maintains feed rates during heavy interrupted cuts on large-bore parts
  • Box-way construction and 12,800 kg mass absorb vibration from heavy cutting

Limitations

  • 1,200 RPM max spindle speed is more restrictive than the LYA (2,000) and LYB (1,500)
  • Big-bore spindle configuration adds cost over standard-bore variants
  • Specialized for large-bore work — overkill for shops not processing tubular stock
  • 12,800 kg requires the most substantial foundation in the 5100 long-bed Y-axis lineup

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the C designation mean on the PUMA 5100 LYC?

The C indicates the big-bore spindle configuration — the largest through-bore option in the 5100 platform. It allows large-diameter tubular stock to pass through the spindle for pipe work, casing machining, and hollow workpiece operations. The L is long bed and Y is Y-axis.

02 How does the LYC compare to the LYB?

Both use 21-inch chucks with 45 kW spindles. The LYC has a larger spindle bore for through-spindle work but a lower max RPM (1,200 vs 1,500). Choose the LYC when you need to pass tubular stock through the spindle. Choose the LYB for solid stock where the extra 300 RPM is beneficial.

03 What does a PUMA 5100 LYC cost?

New machines run $300,000-$390,000 depending on options. The big-bore spindle and Y-axis combination commands the highest premium in the 5100 long-bed lineup. The investment pays back in shops with consistent large-bore pipe and tubular work.

04 Can I do thread cutting on pipe with the LYC?

Absolutely. The LYC supports single-point threading cycles through the FANUC control, making it well-suited for cutting API threads, ACME threads, and buttress threads on large pipe and casing. The C-axis enables thread whirling attachments if needed.
