Overview

Twin 16-tool turrets, twin 4,000 rpm spindles and 78 mm (3 in) of bar capacity: the GEN TURN 78-TTMY is the production version of Expand Machinery's large turning center. With a turret for each spindle, the front of one part and the back of the previous one are machined at the same time, which is the reason to choose it over the single-turret GEN TURN 78-MSY.

The second turret takes away envelope. Maximum turning diameter is 7.48 in (190 mm), with 6.7 in (170 mm) as the standard figure, and turning length is 15.75 in (400 mm). Z1 and Z2 each travel 17.32 in (440 mm). X1 travels 5.9 in (150 mm) and X2 9.05 in (230 mm), both with glass scale feedback. The maker singles that feature out, and with reason: X-axis error shows up directly in part diameter.

Spindle power is 30 HP peak and 20 HP on the 30 min rating for the main spindle, 20 HP peak and 15 HP for the sub-spindle. The turrets take BMT-65 tooling and drive live tools at 6,000 rpm with 7 HP and 14.75 ft-lb (20 Nm). Across the two turrets there are 32 stations, any of which can be an ID, OD or live position, and adjacent tools change in 0.2 seconds. Y travel is 3.93 in, ±1.968 in (±50 mm) off centerline.

This is a large machine: 165 x 88 x 84 in including the chip conveyor, 22,751 lb (10,320 kg), and a supply of 49.5 kVA at 130 amps. An 8 in chuck with a 68 mm bore is listed as optional, so workholding is something to settle in the quote. The B axis travels 25.59 in (650 mm) at 1,573 ipm (40 m/min).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How many tools does the GEN TURN 78-TTMY hold?

Two 16-tool turrets give 32 stations, and Expand Machinery states that any combination of 32 ID, OD or live tool stations is possible and that each station can mount multiple tools. Tooling is BMT-65 base mount with 25 mm square and round tools and ER-32 collets.

02 What are the spindle ratings?

The spindles are integral units running 60 - 4,000 rpm on A2-6 noses. The main spindle motor is 30 HP peak and 20 HP on the 30 min duty rating; the sub-spindle motor is 20 HP peak and 15 HP. Spindle center height is 46.45 in (1,180 mm).

03 Why are there glass scales on X1 and X2?

Glass scales measure the slide position directly instead of inferring it from the ballscrew, so thermal growth of the screw does not turn into diameter error. On this machine X1 travels 5.9 in (150 mm) and X2 9.05 in (230 mm), both with glass scale feedback.

04 What are the Y and B axis figures?

Y travel is 3.93 in, or ±1.968 in (±50 mm) off centerline, with a rapid of 236 ipm (6 m/min). The B axis travels 25.59 in (650 mm) at 1,573 ipm (40 m/min), and the distance between spindles is 36 in (914 mm).

05 How much space and power does it need?

The machine is 165 in wide, 88 in deep and 84 in high including the chip conveyor and weighs 22,751 lb (10,320 kg). Electrical supply is 49.5 kVA at 220 VAC ±5%, 3-phase, 60 Hz, 130 amps, and air is 85 psi at 8 cfm.
