Overview

The Hwacheon VT-650 is a vertical turning center for Ø800 mm (Ø31.5 in) by 750 mm (29.5 in) work on an 18 in chuck, and it comes in many forms. The table covers a standard machine, an MG version with a tool magazine, an MC version with driven tools, MG/MC, a twin-spindle 2SP built the same four ways, and a YMC with a ±125 mm (±4.9 in) Y axis, with or without MG.

The base spindle has an A2-11 nose, a Ø160 mm (Ø6.3 in) front bearing and 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 24.8 hp), and runs to 1,500 rpm; options 1 and 2 raise that to 2,000 rpm. The turret has 12 stations, or 10 on MG versions, takes □32 mm shanks and Ø60 mm boring bars and indexes in 0.2 s/step. X travel is 430 mm (16.9 in) and Z 790 mm (31.1 in), with rapids of 20 / 16 m/min (787 / 630 ipm).

The MG option is what sets this machine apart from a plain turret VTL. It adds a 16-tool CAPTO C5 magazine (16 / 48 on the MG/YMC) taking tools up to Ø75 mm (Ø3.0 in), 400 mm (15.7 in) long and 20 kgf (44 lb), so a job with more tools than the turret holds can run without re-tooling the turret between parts. On MC and YMC machines the driven tools are rated 5.5 / 3.7 kW (7.4 / 5.0 hp) and 3,000 rpm, drill Ø26 mm and tap M20, with 0.0001° C-axis indexing.

Guideways are LM plus box on most versions and box on the YMC. Power demand is 40 kVA for a single machine, 75 kVA for the 2SP and 45 kVA for the YMC, and the coolant tank holds 195 L. Weight runs from 10,000 kgf (22,046 lb) for the standard machine to 20,000 ~ 22,200 kgf (44,092 ~ 48,942 lb) for the 2SP, and height is 3,143 mm (123.7 in), 3,300 mm (129.9 in) on the YMC.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Optional 16-tool CAPTO C5 magazine (MG) taking tools up to Ø75 mm (Ø3.0 in) and 400 mm (15.7 in) long
  • YMC version adds ±125 mm (±4.9 in) of Y travel for off-centre milling and drilling
  • Driven tools on MC and YMC rated 5.5 / 3.7 kW (7.4 / 5.0 hp) and 3,000 rpm, with Ø26 mm drilling and M20 tapping
  • Ø800 mm (Ø31.5 in) by 750 mm (29.5 in) turning envelope on an 18 in chuck
  • Twin-spindle 2SP version with 18 + 18 in chucks and a 2-path control

Limitations

  • Standard spindle speed is 1,500 rpm; 2,000 rpm needs option 1 or 2
  • MG versions drop the turret from 12 to 10 stations
  • Spindle power is 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 24.8 hp) for an 18 in chuck, the same rating as the smaller VT-450
  • The 2SP version weighs 20,000 ~ 22,200 kgf (44,092 ~ 48,942 lb) and needs 75 kVA

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What do the MG, MC, 2SP and YMC versions of the VT-650 add?

MG adds a 16-tool CAPTO C5 magazine and reduces the turret to 10 stations. MC adds driven tools of 5.5 / 3.7 kW (7.4 / 5.0 hp) and 3,000 rpm with 0.0001° C-axis indexing. 2SP is a twin-spindle machine with 18 + 18 in chucks and a 2-path control. YMC adds a ±125 mm (±4.9 in) Y axis with box guideways.

02 What size tools does the VT-650 magazine take?

On MG versions the magazine holds 16 CAPTO C5 tools (16 / 48 on the MG/YMC). Tools can be up to Ø75 mm (Ø3.0 in) in diameter, 400 mm (15.7 in) long and 20 kgf (44 lb).

03 How fast is the VT-650 spindle?

1,500 rpm as standard, or 2,000 rpm with option 1 or option 2, on an A2-11 nose with a Ø160 mm (Ø6.3 in) front bearing. Power is 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 24.8 hp) in every version.

04 Should I choose the VT-650 YMC or the VT-650Y?

Both are listed with ±125 mm of Y and the same Ø800 mm (Ø31.5 in) by 750 mm (29.5 in) envelope. The VT-650Y has its own page and table, which lists chuck options of 15, 21 and 24 in and a high-torque 2,000 rpm spindle option, so compare the two quotes line by line.

05 How much does the VT-650 weigh?

The standard machine weighs 10,000 kgf (22,046 lb), MG and MC versions 11,100 kgf (24,471 lb), the YMC 13,000 ~ 14,000 kgf (28,660 ~ 30,864 lb) and the 2SP 20,000 ~ 22,200 kgf (44,092 ~ 48,942 lb).
