Overview

With an 80 in (2,032 mm) maximum swing, the Fryer VT-80 is the largest vertical turret lathe in the VT series. One row of its table deserves attention before any other: the cutting diameter range is 12 - 80 in (305 - 2,032 mm). Unlike the VT-40 and VT-60, whose turrets reach the spindle centre, this machine does not cut inside a 12 in diameter.

The reason is in the column travel. X travel is 35 in (889 mm), almost the same as the VT-60, but shifted outward, so that the turret face moves between 6 and 41 in (152 to 1,041 mm) from the spindle centre. The machine is therefore suited to rings, large flanges, slewing bearings and wheel rims, parts with an open centre, and less suited to solid discs that must be faced to the middle or bored small.

Otherwise it matches the VT-60 row for row. The spindle is A2-15 with a 75 hp (55.9 kW) peak motor, 10 - 500 rpm and 2,700 ft-lb (3,661 Nm) of peak torque. Part weight is 10,000 lb (4,536 kg), Z travel 32 in (813 mm), and the turret holds 8 tools in BMT-65 with 12 optional.

The footprint remains small for the swing, 185 x 100 in (4,699 x 2,540 mm), with a weight of 37,000 lb (16,783 kg). Height is the larger concern at 148 in (3,759 mm) in operation and 115 in (2,921 mm) for shipping. Fryer offers the series with a Siemens or Fanuc CNC.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Can the Fryer VT-80 cut to the centre of a part?

Not according to Fryer's table. The cutting diameter range is 12 - 80 in (305 - 2,032 mm) and the turret face to spindle center distance runs from 6 to 41 in (152 to 1,041 mm). The VT-60 is listed with a range of 0 - 60 in (0 - 1,524 mm).

02 What are the travels of the VT-80?

Column travel in X is 35 in (889 mm). Longitudinal travel in Z is 32 in (813 mm), or 48 in (1,219 mm) with the extended Z travel option, which gives 8" - 56" from the bottom of the turret faceplate to the top of the spindle nose.

03 How does the VT-80 differ from the VT-60?

Swing, reach and size. The VT-60 swings 60 in (1,524 mm), cuts from 0 in, weighs 32,000 lb (14,515 kg) and occupies 162 x 79 in (4,115 x 2,007 mm). The VT-80 swings 80 in (2,032 mm), cuts from 12 in (305 mm), weighs 37,000 lb (16,783 kg) and occupies 185 x 100 in (4,699 x 2,540 mm). Spindle and turret rows are the same.

04 What coolant and air does the VT-80 need?

The coolant tank holds 75 gal (284 L) and the pump delivers 8 gpm (30 L/min); a 300 psi coolant through turret system is an option. Air demand is 5 cfm (142 L/min) at 90 psi (6.2 bar).
