Overview

With 18 in (457 mm) of swing and a two-range headstock, the Fryer ET-18 is the Easy Turn toolroom lathe that most general turning ends up on. It shares its bed, 40 in (1,016 mm) center distance and footprint with the ET-16, and differs in the headstock and in what can be ordered for it.

The headstock shifts automatically between a low range of 50 - 350 rpm and a high range of 350 - 2,500 rpm. That low range is what a toolroom lathe needs for facing a large flange, single-point threading a coarse pitch or roughing a tough material at a large diameter without stalling a 10 hp (7.5 kW) peak motor. Swing over the cross slide is 9.125 in (232 mm).

Bore size is the decision to make at order time. The standard spindle has a 2.05 in (52 mm) bore and a Camlock D1-6 nose. Fryer's Big Bore Option #1 for the ET-18 changes that to a 3.40” bore with a D1-8 nose and a 15 HP (peak) motor, and sets maximum speed at 2,000 rpm. Shops that feed bar or tube through the spindle should compare that bore with their stock before anything else.

Supported part weight is 2,500 lb (1,134 kg), well above the ET-16, although a part held in the chuck alone is still limited to 500 lb (227 kg). The machine weighs 6,500 lb (2,948 kg) and takes 86 x 74 in (2,184 x 1,880 mm) of floor. An 8” hydraulic 3 jaw chuck with 1.57" bar capacity is listed for this model.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Auto-shift headstock with a 50 - 350 rpm low range and a 350 - 2,500 rpm high range
  • Big Bore Option #1 raises the spindle bore to 3.40” with a D1-8 nose and a 15 HP (peak) motor
  • Supported part weight of 2,500 lb (1,134 kg)
  • Same 86 x 74 in (2,184 x 1,880 mm) floor area as the ET-16
  • Hardened and ground ways with Turcite B liners on a 14 in (356 mm) wide bed

Limitations

  • Standard bore is 2.05 in (52 mm); the larger bore is an option and limits speed to 2,000 rpm
  • Unsupported part weight is 500 lb (227 kg), no more than the ET-16
  • X travel is 10 in (254 mm) and rapids are 400 ipm (10.2 m/min)
  • Coolant tank holds 10 gal (38 L)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the big bore option on the Fryer ET-18?

Fryer's options sheet calls it Big Bore Option #1 for the ET-18. It includes a 3.40” spindle bore, a D1-8 2 speed headstock and a 15 HP (peak) motor, with a 2,000 rpm maximum speed. The standard machine has a 2.05 in (52 mm) bore, a Camlock D1-6 nose and a 10 hp (7.5 kW) peak motor.

02 How does the ET-18 differ from the ET-16?

The ET-16 has 16 in (406 mm) of swing, a single gear range of 100 - 3,000 rpm and a supported part weight of 1,500 lb (680 kg). The ET-18 has 18 in (457 mm) of swing, two auto-shift ranges up to 2,500 rpm and 2,500 lb (1,134 kg) supported. Bed width, travels and floor dimensions are the same rows for both.

03 What are the travels of the ET-18?

Cross slide travel (X) is 10 in (254 mm) and longitudinal travel (Z) is 37 in (940 mm) with the standard 40 in (1,016 mm) center distance. With the optional 60 in (1,524 mm) center distance Z travel is 57 in (1,448 mm).

04 Can the ET-18 be fitted with a turret and a power chuck?

Yes, both from the options sheet. An 8 station bi-directional automatic turret for 3/4” tooling is listed for the ET-16 and ET-18, and an 8” hydraulic 3 jaw chuck with 1.57" bar capacity is listed for the ET-18. A quick-change tool post for 1" tooling is the alternative to the turret.
