Overview

The Fryer VT-60 is the 60 in (1,524 mm) swing model of Fryer's traveling column vertical turret lathes, and the one the series page is built around. It turns parts up to 10,000 lb (4,536 kg) with a 75 hp (55.9 kW) peak motor on an A2-15 spindle nose.

Column travel is the figure that explains the design. The column moves 34 in (864 mm) in X, taking the turret face from 3 in past the spindle centre out to 31 in (787 mm) from it. Being able to cross the centre means boring bars and facing tools can work right to the middle of a part, and Fryer points to the horizontal turret's clearance for long and short tools alike. The same travel is achieved without a cross rail spanning the swing, hence the 162 x 79 in (4,115 x 2,007 mm) footprint.

Speed is low and torque high, as large diameters require. The spindle runs 10 - 500 rpm, with a peak torque of 2,700 ft-lb (3,661 Nm) in Fryer's table and 6,504 lb of axis thrust on X and Z.

Fryer's site shows this model in several roles: with handwheels on the 828 control, with live tools working on the face and the outside diameter, with a grinding attachment for OD and ID grinding, and with measurement probing. The 'C' axis option is listed with a maximum chuck size for contouring of 60", which is this machine's swing. A standard 8 station BMT-65 turret, 750 ipm (19.1 m/min) rapids and a 75 gal (284 L) coolant tank complete the picture.
