How much does the Fryer ET-50 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fryer ET-50 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fryer ET-50 opens the ET-XL series of extra large flat-bed CNC lathes. It swings 50 in (1,270 mm) over a bed that is 30 in (762 mm) wide, clears 35 in (889 mm) over the cross slide and, in its shortest form, has 60 in (1,524 mm) between centers. Fryer calls these wide bed heavy duty engine lathes, and the figures back the description: the base machine weighs 26,500 lb (12,020 kg).
Torque defines the headstock. A 50 hp (37.3 kW) peak motor drives a three speed autoshift geared headstock, and Fryer states a peak spindle torque of 19,700 ft-lb (26,710 Nm) at 30 rpm. The three ranges are 3 - 30 rpm, 31 - 150 rpm and 151 - 750 rpm. Those are speeds for large rolls, forgings and castings, where surface speed comes from diameter rather than from rpm.
Part weight is given in two rows. With the tailstock alone the limit is 15,000 lb (6,804 kg); with steady rest and tailstock it is 20,000 lb (9,072 kg). Z thrust peaks at 12,720 lb. The standard spindle bore is 6.10 in (155 mm) on an A2-11 nose, and Fryer lists big bore options up to a 20" bore.
Length is chosen from a long list. Center distances of 80, 120, 160, 200, 240, 280 and 340 in are optional, with a 340” center distance at the top of the options sheet, and the weight climbs to 46,100 lb (20,911 kg) with 280 in centers. Live tool turrets, a Y axis turret and a 'C' axis spindle can be added, so milling and drilling can be done without moving a heavy part to another machine.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Fryer's table gives a peak spindle torque of 19,700 ft-lb (26,710 Nm) at 30 rpm. The motor is 50 hp (37.3 kW) peak and the three speed geared headstock shifts automatically between 3 - 30 rpm, 31 - 150 rpm and 151 - 750 rpm. A 75 HP (peak) spindle motor upgrade is on the options sheet.
02
15,000 lb (6,804 kg) with the tailstock and 20,000 lb (9,072 kg) with steady rest and tailstock. The tailstock is hydraulic with a built-in live center, a 6.50 in (165 mm) quill and 12.0 in (305 mm) of quill travel, and its body is moved by an electric motor with rack and pinion.
03
Swing is 50 in (1,270 mm) over the bed and 35 in (889 mm) over the cross slide. The standard center distance is 60 in (1,524 mm) with 67 in (1,702 mm) of Z travel. Optional center distances run from 80 in (2,032 mm) to 340 in (8,636 mm).
