Overview

The Harrison Alpha 1350XS is the entry point to the Alpha range of CNC/manual combination lathes: a flat-bed machine that can be driven by handwheels like a centre lathe or run as a full CNC. It swings 350 mm (13.8 in) over the bed, has 650 mm (25.6 in) between centres and uses an 8 in (203 mm) chuck. The spindle covers 1 - 3,500 rpm on a 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) motor.

What defines an Alpha is the control, a customised Fanuc 0i-TF Plus with a 10.4 in colour touch screen. Colchester describes five operating modes selected by a key. Manual Mode gives conventional operation with DRO-style displays. The Alpha System is a question-and-answer conversational mode for cycle-based work. Manual Guide i is Fanuc's conversational CNC with 3D simulation. AlphaLink brings in programs from a CAD/CAM system, and Full CNC Mode accepts standard G-code at the control.

In the workshop that means one lathe can handle a quick manual repair, a semi-automatic thread or taper, and a repeat batch from a stored program. The 1350XS is the short, fast member of the family. It offers one bed length only, and its top speed is the highest of the XS models, which suits small-diameter work within the 42 mm (1.7 in) spindle bore.

UK-specification machines come with a PBI Super Precision 3-jaw scroll chuck and a Dickson quick change tool post. An auto indexing tool turret is an option, as are Parat and Multifix tool posts, steady rests and hydraulic chucking. Swing in the gap is 535 mm (21.1 in).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Five operating modes, from handwheel manual turning to full G-code CNC, on one Fanuc 0i-TF Plus control
  • Spindle speed range of 1 - 3,500 rpm, the fastest of the Alpha XS models
  • Built to DIN 8605 toolroom accuracy standards, as stated by the maker
  • Gap bed gives 535 mm (21.1 in) of swing for short, large-diameter parts
  • Auto indexing tool turret available as an option in place of the quick change tool post

Limitations

  • Only 650 mm (25.6 in) between centres, with no longer bed offered on this model
  • 42 mm (1.7 in) spindle bore limits bar and tube work
  • Swing over the cross slide is 196 mm (7.7 in), which sets the real diameter limit for shaft work
  • No C-axis or driven tools on the XS version

Best For

Toolroom one-offs and repairs done in manual or semi-automatic mode Small batches of short turned parts up to 650 mm (25.6 in) between centres Training centres that teach manual and CNC turning on the same machine Small-diameter work that benefits from 3,500 rpm

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is a CNC/manual combination lathe?

It's a flat-bed lathe that can be operated by hand or under program control. On the Harrison Alpha 1350XS the operator chooses between Manual Mode, the conversational Alpha System, Manual Guide i, AlphaLink offline programming and Full CNC Mode. Colchester says the Alpha System can be learned in under half a day.

02 What are the main capacities of the Harrison Alpha 1350XS?

Swing over the bed is 350 mm (13.8 in), swing in the gap 535 mm (21.1 in) and swing over the cross slide 196 mm (7.7 in). Distance between centres is 650 mm (25.6 in). The spindle bore is 42 mm (1.7 in) on a D1-4 camlock nose, with an 8 in (203 mm) chuck.

03 What spindle does it have?

A 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) spindle with a speed range of 1 - 3,500 rpm and a D1-4 camlock nose. The larger Harrison Alpha 1400XS has the same 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) but a lower ceiling of 2,700 rpm and a bigger D1-6 nose.

04 Is a turret standard?

No. The standard tool carrier on UK-specification machines is a Dickson quick change tool post with tool holders. An auto indexing tool turret is listed under optional features, along with Parat and Multifix tool post options. The tailstock is manual.
