Fryer SL-12 — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Fryer SL-12 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Fryer or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

Largest of the SL slant bed turning centers, the Fryer SL-12 carries a 12 in (305 mm) hydraulic chuck, turns up to 18 in (457 mm) in diameter and passes 3.6 in (91 mm) bar through a 4.17 in (106 mm) spindle bore. A 15 in (381 mm) chuck is the upgrade.

The table shows that Fryer strengthened the axes for this size. Peak thrust on X and Z is 10,732 lb, where the SL-10 has 6,360 lb, and the tailstock quill grows to 4.15 in (105 mm) with an MT-5 taper. Cross slide travel is 11 in (279 mm). Those rows, together with box ways on a 45° bed, describe a lathe intended to take heavy cuts on large-diameter steel while still positioning to +/- 0.00010 in (0.0025 mm).

Motor and nose are shared with the SL-10, 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak on A2-8, and maximum speed is 3,000 rpm. On an 18 in part that speed is rarely the limit; torque is, and the 2 speed ZF gearbox option addresses it. Bar capacity is already at 3.6 in in the base machine, so no big bore option is listed for this model.

As on the SL-10, working length is 24 in (610 mm) as standard and 46 in (1,168 mm) or 80 in (2,032 mm) with the extended Z travel options. The machine is 128 x 69 in (3,251 x 1,753 mm) in the standard length, weighs 16,000 lb (7,258 kg) and needs 80 A. Live tooling in VDI-40 or BMT-55, a Y axis turret, a parts catcher and a bar feeder are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the largest part the Fryer SL-12 can turn?

Maximum turning diameter is 18 in (457 mm) under a 28 in (711 mm) swing over the bed. Working length is 24 in (610 mm) as standard and 46 in (1,168 mm) or 80 in (2,032 mm) with the extended Z travel options. Cross slide travel is 11 in (279 mm).

02 How does the SL-12 differ from the SL-10?

The SL-10 has a 10 in (254 mm) chuck, a 3.4 in (86 mm) bore, 6,360 lb of axis thrust and runs to 3,500 rpm. The SL-12 has a 12 in (305 mm) chuck, a 4.17 in (106 mm) bore, 10,732 lb of thrust, a larger tailstock quill and runs to 3,000 rpm. Both have 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak and an A2-8 nose.

03 What bar capacity does the SL-12 have?

3.6 in (91 mm), with a spindle bore of 4.17 in (106 mm). Fryer lists a magazine style bar feeder with 2.5" capacity on the options sheet, for bars up to 4' in length; stock larger than that is loaded by other means.

04 What control does the SL-12 use?

The series page describes the Fryer / Siemens 828-HS CNC with fast set-up and conversational programming, and lists shop floor and G code programming and a tool and part probe system. Fryer offers the series with a Siemens or Fanuc CNC.
