Overview

The Fryer VT-40 is a vertical turret lathe with a 40 in (1,016 mm) maximum swing, built on a traveling column instead of the usual cross rail. The column carries a horizontal turret toward and away from the spindle centre, which is how Fryer fits a large-swing VTL into a floor area of 140 x 67 in (3,556 x 1,702 mm). Its series page puts it as a compact design that uses half the floor space.

A vertical lathe exists for heavy, awkward discs and rings that are easier to lay on a chuck than to hang from one. The VT-40 takes parts up to 8,000 lb (3,629 kg) and cuts across a diameter range of 0 - 40 in (0 - 1,016 mm), with 32 in (813 mm) of cutting length and Z travel in the standard machine. An option extends Z travel to 48".

Of the three VT models this is the fastest. The spindle runs 20 - 1,500 rpm on a 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak motor through a geared headstock, and Fryer's table gives a peak torque of 3,050 ft-lb (4,135 Nm). The VT-60 and VT-80 are limited to 500 rpm, so smaller diameters, where surface speed needs rpm, belong on the VT-40.

The turret holds 8 tools in BMT-65, or 12 with the faceplate upgrade. Live tooling with a 10 hp (7.5 kW) spindle and a contouring 'C' axis are options that turn the lathe into a mill-turn for bolt circles, keyways and faces. The machine weighs 26,000 lb (11,794 kg) and stands 148 in (3,759 mm) tall.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size parts does the Fryer VT-40 turn?

Maximum swing is 40 in (1,016 mm), the cutting diameter range is 0 - 40 in (0 - 1,016 mm), maximum cutting length is 32 in (813 mm) and maximum part weight is 8,000 lb (3,629 kg). With the extended Z travel option the cutting length becomes 48 in (1,219 mm).

02 What spindle does the VT-40 have?

An A2-11 spindle nose, a 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak motor and a speed range of 20 - 1,500 rpm, with peak torque of 3,050 ft-lb (4,135 Nm). Fryer describes a high torque geared headstock for the series.

03 Does the VT-40 offer live tooling?

As an option. The table lists an optional live tooling spindle of 10 hp (7.5 kW) at 10 - 4,000 rpm, and the options sheet has an 8 station live tool turret in BMT-65 and a 'C' axis contouring and indexing spindle with a Heidenhain rotary scale.
